In all the tumult over US President Donald Trump's signing of a memorandum in favor of the speedy resumption of building the Keystone XL pipeline, something important has been lost.
It's that he also signed a memorandum that would make the pipeline way more expensive and in violation of international trade law.

Oh my goodness, we can’t use U.S. Steel because the World Trade Organization says we have to allow other countries to bid on the work.
That’s it then, we are just going to have to scrap those illegal plans for U.S. steel on a pipeline built in the U.S.
sarcasm
“...Might be kinda’ hard to fight a war if you have to depend on imports.”
That last sentence concerns me, too. Fr’instance, I read that antibiotics are all manufactured abroad (think it was China) and it would/could take up to 6 months to “hatch” all the necessary components to set that up here in the U.S.
Were we in the middle of a discussion on another thread about the Commerce Clause when the thread was removed?
Hey, thanks to obeisance to the WTO, we now don’t know WTH our meat comes from. Hopefully Trump will find time to deal with the repeal of country of origin labeling while he’s at it. So we can say goodbye to mystery meat!
Quality vs. built-in obsolescence. Hard to believe, I know, but I bought a new house ten years ago, and EVERY kitchen appliance broke and had to be replaced in the 10th year...cooktop, wall oven, microwave, dishwasher, even the hood over the cooktop. The garbage disposal we purchased ourselves, and it was the only thing still working. When we first married (1959), we bought a second hand refrigerator for $25, all porcelain interior, the kind with just two small ice trays, that had to be defrosted periodically. Kept lettuce so cold, it crunched, and milk so cold, drinking it hurt ya’ between the eyes. We used it for at least 3 or 4 years, before finally getting a brand new one, selling it again for $25. Never had a refrigerator that kept things so well (or lasted) since.
“World Trade Organization.. Member-nations...supposed to allow companies to compete fairly on the price of goods...”
More leftist hypocrisy. If we were talking about “labor”, the left would be crying about how unions bids were being “unfairly” undercut by non-union, and/or non-minority-preferenced bidders.
Dropping the country of origin designation was just a favor to the rest of the world that fit nicely with Obama’s plan to weaken our country.
I understand that some posts of certain published lies can help in ferreting out the truth and can be very helpful. But much of the stream of the almost endless Leftist medias published lies posted on FR often has no redeeming value, gets everyone all pissed off and demoralized, and seems sometimes to even strengthen the lie.
If youre told a lie, dont repeat it. Neutralize the lie by speaking the truth. Lies arent defeated by repeating the lie. Lies are defeated by repeating the truth. We should have our eyes on the prize - in this case, politically, what it takes to recover our Free Constitutional Republic. That should be what we major on and focus on.
We should be mostly publishing the truth on FR, not the lies and as much good news as possible to bolster morale. We should find reliable sources that have already deconstructed the lie and replaced it with the truth and with a headline that says the truth. We need much more of that on FR IMO. The key is the headline and the first few sentences because not everyone has time to drill down. The endless stream of negative, lying headlines sabotages our purpose IMO.
This isn’t aimed particularity at you artichokegrower but to FReepers in general.
Construction projects that are built using private capital and/or (in many cases) state money with no Federal contribution have no such requirements. That’s how Caltrans got around the USDOT “Buy America” requirements when they contracted with the Chinese for the Bay Bridge project.
A big factor in cost of domestic steel: Cost of energy.
Maybe Trump is going to do something about that :)
Another big factor: Environmental regulation.
Maybe Trump is going to do something about that :)
Much of steel production is automated. It can’t only be cheap chicom labor that gets their price down. There are self imposed external factors that can be undone.
AND YET...
The Bay Bridge was made of Chinese steel, fabricated in China, brought over here on Chinese ships and erected using a huge Chinese crane. 1 posted on 1/26/2017, 9:13:53 AM by artichokegrower
Oh noes.....concern trolls are concerned
And exactly what would you use to indicate a negative warning ? Wouldn't we have to put it on ALL MSM ARTICLES ?
MAJOR BARF ALERT . . . and yes, I would add it to all MSM stories that tout the commie lie.
I really don’t think that is so much to ask.
We are at war. War is hard.
Yes, we are at war. And a big part of the war is lies vs. the truth. As I said, you neutralize the lie by speaking the truth. Lies arent defeated by repeating the lie. Lies are defeated by repeating the truth.
Great. Fine.
Next time you post an ARTICLE from the MSM, be sure to add MAJOR BARF ALERT to the title.
I take it you don’t care what perception your postings create. That is troublesome.
Lies are defeated by repeating the truth.
They are also defeated by being destroyed with actual compelling facts. That can’t be done if someone has not seen the lie, nor how the lie is being communicated.
I really hate echo chamber sites.
Personally I am not demoralized in the slightest by the insane lying ramblings of the left - I am energized. This has all become theatre of the absurd with these klowns. They never had much in the way of objectivity but now they are banging 0% and even their contemporaries are laughing at them.
