What if he felt threatened merely because the guy was espousing conservative talking points? If he can make the case that he feared for his safety because of it then the law should protect him. People have made the claim of fearing for their life on a lot less.

Based on the videos I've seen, the shooter had already witnessed one or more people being attacked and beaten, he himself appears to have been punched and roughed-up, he appeared to try to retreat, and just before the shooting he was again surrounded by a mob of young men, many of them wearing masks, and jostled or punched again. It's a pretty good self-defense scenario, in my opinion.
