Based on the videos I've seen, the shooter had already witnessed one or more people being attacked and beaten, he himself appears to have been punched and roughed-up, he appeared to try to retreat, and just before the shooting he was again surrounded by a mob of young men, many of them wearing masks, and jostled or punched again. It's a pretty good self-defense scenario, in my opinion.

Yes - and obviously the police think it was a good shoot as they let him go. Even if the guy in the yellow hat had not been attacked - Washington State law allows one to use deadly force to stop a felony on another person - even a stranger.
