An open letter to Trump from the US press corps
Columbia Journalism Review ^ | January 17, 2017 | Kyle Pope

Posted on 01/18/2017 6:33:47 AM PST by Ciaphas Cain

DEAR MR. PRESIDENT ELECT:

In these final days before your inauguration, we thought it might be helpful to clarify how we see the relationship between your administration and the American press corps.

It will come as no surprise to you that we see the relationship as strained. Reports over the last few days that your press secretary is considering pulling news media offices out of the White House are the latest in a pattern of behavior that has persisted throughout the campaign: You’ve banned news organizations from covering you. You’ve taken to Twitter to taunt and threaten individual reporters and encouraged your supporters to do the same. You’ve advocated for looser libel laws and threatened numerous lawsuits of your own, none of which has materialized. You’ve avoided the press when you could and flouted the norms of pool reporting and regular press conferences. You’ve ridiculed a reporter who wrote something you didn’t like because he has a disability.

All of this, of course, is your choice and, in a way, your right. While the Constitution protects the freedom of the press, it doesn’t dictate how the president must honor that; regular press conferences aren’t enshrined in the document.

But while you have every right to decide your ground rules for engaging with the press, we have some, too. It is, after all, our airtime and column inches that you are seeking to influence. We, not you, decide how best to serve our readers, listeners, and viewers. So think of what follows as a backgrounder on what to expect from us over the next four years.

When Pres. Trump selects only 49 “Journalists” who can fit on the Press Room, and bypasses CNN, WaPO, NY Slimes, etc., we’ll hear them wailing and moaning.

He should invite ONLY one journalist from each state, from an independent paper, maybe from a small city. NO AP,CNN, etc. Give EACH one one question. Get the whole country involved, not just NY/DC/LA.

In these final days before your inauguration, we thought it might be helpful to clarify how we see the relationship between your administration and the American press corps.

It will come as no surprise to you that we see the relationship as strained.

We have to regain that trust. And we’ll do it through accurate, fearless reporting

Who is this “we” who is talking? Is it not a single writer, on the one hand - but is he not presuming, safely, to speak for all journalists?

And who is he talking to? Nominally, Mr. Trump. But we “deplorables” are the actual targets.

Well, guess what! We are onto your con.

First, we know that you can speak for all of journalism - for the simple reason that journalism is a united entity under the auspices of the Associated Press. You are all “associated,” we get it. All members of the AP - IOW, all of major journalism - are associated. You are all in cahoots. And it would take courage - actual courage for a member of that cartel of yours to break ranks.

Second, you have taken the mask off in this past election cycle. You went all in for Hillary. For a candidate who could not, in a non-corrupt organization be hired to handle private information for fear she would place her own convenience above the consequences to others who depended on and trusted that organization. An utterly untrustworthy individual who demands our implicit trust.

Third, we understand that in your business bad news - bad news for American society - sells. And that cynicism toward society, and naivete toward government - IOW, socialism - is a natural corollary to that stance. You are all a bunch of cynics selling something we “deplorables” have no desire to buy.

And that is why we tune you out. That is all.

Don’t give the Media anything. Make the pay. If they want to participate in the White Press Pool, let them form an LLC and lease building and outfit it.

President Trump will take this into consideration and file it under K.M.A.

Go away, little snowflake crybabies. Your feelings don’t matter to anyone except yourselves. Hope you have Costco-sized jars of Vaseline on hand, the b*tt-hurt will be powerful and extended.

This letter, to Trump, amounts to a mosquito on your arm you slap and kill.

Maybe that is actually ascribing too much importance to the letter.

I suggest Trump keep the presstitute corps in the White House, but simply assign them new offices ... in a former men’s room in the sub-basement right next to the floor drains ... with a single 60-watt light bulb hanging from the ceiling and no more than two electrical outlets.

Ventilation isn’t the greatest either. And the heat can sometimes get a little crazy.

And never mind the cockroaches. They’re more colleagues than threats.

So, how many of these people had to put their heads together to come up with this comically deluded “open letter?” “Strained?” I suppose it’s beyond their capacity to ever wonder why, it just has to be external. They can do no wrong.

They’re so funny as they seem to think they are above being questioned.

We used that as kids then, and as adults now. It always meant “tough shit” to us. I’m guessing you are tryin to be more nuanced than I am.

Take a flying freak at a rolling donut!

I find it hilarious that you would quote a Vonnegut novel about "the current King of Manhattan (and last President of the United States)".

“”It is, after all, our airtime and column inches that you are seeking to influence.””

While I don’t “DO” Twitter or FB, I gather that he is reaching those who DO so what’s this business of him needing them???? I thought he was able to get his message out HIS WAY - cutting them out of the loop!!! If I as an elder can understand what’s going on, why can’t they?

I would no more waste several seconds of my life reading this crap (160+ IQ, I speed read faster than Evelyn Woods) than I would rip my own pud off with a pair of vice-grips.

The USA Press has some severely, viciously bad lumps coming, and Donald John Trump is just the mammoth leviathan to deliver real justice for these assholes.

It's going to be fun to watch him pulverize these sanctimonious, holier-than-thou cretins, and smash them flat. It'll be interesting to see what they have to say when he kicks CNN, MSNBC, etc., out of the Press Corp, replacing them with Rich Dice, Breitbart, NextNews, Info Wars/Alex Jones, TEA Party Tribune, Canada Free Press, etc.

Talk about heads exploding! This is SO MUCH FUN!!!! I WANT TO KEEP WINNING FOREVER!!!!!!!!

We will set higher standards for ourselves than ever before.

What? Even better propaganda and agitprop? Incite more riots? Turn more minorities against the police by lying? Joe Stalin never had a ministry of propaganda so skilled. Who wrote this?

"... by acknowledging our errors and abiding by the most stringent ethical standards we set for ourselves."

Ahhhh. We see. That "you set for yourselves," huh? I'm pretty sure that was the locus of the original problem in the first place. You are unelected and accountable to nobody.

We need a civilian body that oversees, reviews complaints about, decides punishments for, and generally assert control over the currently out-of-control propaganda arm of the DNC, The American mainstream press.

Now go suck, presstitutes... you do it so often, and so well.
