I just looked it up. I was actually correct for once! I have had many Jewish friends.
I can see why you would spell it that way. Course this was dictionary . com
I think they most likely make crap up and censor their website...who knows??

I think your sources spell it that way because they confuse German and Yiddish spellings. Yiddish is dialect of German but it was written with Hebrew letters. The word for black in German is schwartz. The "W" is pronounced as a V. (Think Wagner.) Yiddish spells this with the Hebrew letter vav which is pronounced as a V.

There is an R equivalent in both the German and Yiddish, but I've never heard it pronounced, so since I'm transliterating I omit it.
