One source I found in a Google search indicates that John Lewis, the civil rights leader, was a sponsor and vice chairman of the Communist Party, USA, between 1962 and 1964. There was another John Lewis, a white labor leader in the early to mid-20th Century, who had Communist associations, but this is a separate listing.

There was a series of books published in the 1960s and 1970s, called The Biographical Dictionary of the Left, that had thumbnail biographies of American leftists from the 19th Century through the time of publication. That would include the period of Lewis's supposed Communist affiliation. I don't have access to these books. However, with CIA chief John Brennan a Muslim convert and a former Communist voter, I would not be surprised if Lewis had been a Communist.
