Viet Cong veteran Vo Ban Tam remembers the first time he crossed paths with John Kerry on the banks on the Bay Hap river, a day that ended in bloodshed.

Kerry locked eyes with Ban Tam and said “Yes - that’s him. Those slant eyes are seared in my memory.”

Ban Tam stared back, and through his interpreter said “I would know those round eyes anywhere - they are seared in my memory.”
