Dead retailers redeemed more than $2 billion worth of food stamps, according to a new audit.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s inspector general reviewed billions of transactions through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. It found that thousands of stores authorized to accept food stamps were using the Social Security numbers of deceased persons.
An audit released Thursday found instances of potential fraud where the Food and Nutrition Service issued food stamps through stores that claimed to be owned by children or the dead.
“We found that 3,394 authorized SNAP retailers (retailers) used Social Security Numbers (SSN) that matched SSNs of deceased people,” the inspector general said. “Additionally, 193 retailers listed owners who were not at least 18 years of age. While FNS did have some controls to edit or verify SNAP retail owner information, these controls were not adequate to ensure owner information accuracy.” …

That was my take too.
It read to me like retailers had the phoney ideas. Not SNAP card users.
So this would seem to be a income tax avoidance issue rather than a SNAP card halder fraud?
I guess the stores as re still doing business because justice is staffed with dead police.
And the eerie part is that they have been used - mainly in stores around polling places....
My sources in Bronx NY tell me that small stores will take food stamps for beer and cigarettes, at 80 percent of value. The Cigs are black market, moved in from Virginia with no NY state tax. So the State of NY is actually taxing people who work to buy cigarettes for its people who don’t work.

This article is confusing as all get out.
Retail stores “issue food stamps”? Among other illogical statements that it’s too early for me to have a coherent opinion on.
Probably drugs.
My friend in NYC tells me that he has friends on prescription drugs like synthetic opiates. They get them from medicare or medicaid. So these are free. They don’t use the pills, but they sell them. So I guess they take food stamps for these pills and drugs like Crack, then get reimbursed with Obama stash. Our money.

My guess is these are stores run by either illegal aliens or people already denied entry into the SNAP system.
Send them to jail, or you have to release robbers in jail for stealing a few dollars by snatching a purse or robbing a liquor. These thieves have stolen billions from struggling taxpayers.
The term “dead” is dehumanizing and wrong. They are simply people with an alternate “life state” who are “life impaired”. And the only reason they are impaired is prejudice against them by the living.
In many cases they are being buried in little boxes or even burned.

We would save hundreds of billions of dollars and the genuinely poor would still get fed.
I've been thinking about this lately. In the old days, work would drive people to move toward it. If a new mine opened up, manufacturer, some new project, people would flood toward it. Following the money for a livelihood.
Today, people still follow the money, only it's being doled out for NOT working. THIS is the source of our immigration problems, our unemployed work force, etc. Being the drawdown and eventual elimination of paying people to remain idle, and all kinds of entrepreneurial will start happening as everyone will be looking for work or creating work, doing whatever they can to make a living. They will start applying at those oil field jobs that are two states away. They'll get serious about learning a skill. Right now, all you have to know is how to fill out forms to have money sent to you.
The normal human condition contains the drive to survive. The FED gov is taking total advantage of this by leading people to WANT to sign up for all the benefits because it pays better than work. This will collapse the whole system eventually. But when everyone worked for a living, and sought work as soon as they were out of school or before, the country prospered.
Dead people are much more active recently. I guess zombies are true...
Agree, but one step further. Return ALL welfare programs to the State level. Get it completely out of the Federal level. Let each state return to being a laboratory for discovering what works and what will not.
This will also drive people to follow the money to the states that hand out the most, and those states will be the first to fail.

It sure as hell shouldn’t have taken a U.S. Department of Agriculture’s inspector general to figure that one out. The “gibsmedats” have been milking the cow for years and FINALLY someone got a clue who were stealing the milk?
Yes, we need some serious changes made it our government.
