GW lost the first debate to Kerry pretty badly. But Laura at least evened the score for the night when she went over to speak with Theresa on stage.
Theresa was at the front of the stage and looking somewhat confused. She had her hand over her brow to shield her eyes from the lights and to scan the crowd. Then Laura walked up with a big smile, held out her hand, and really started to converse with Theresa. Theresa looked very relieved to see her and was smiling and talking back. The networks didn’t like the looks of that so they cut away to a wide shot. GW and Kerry were shaking hands and talking in a rather perfunctory way just outside of the spotlight. But Laura and Theresa were well-lit, center-stage and talking animatedly like old friends. But it was clear Laura was the lady who initiated and invigorated the friendly chat between them. She had the closing moments under her control and, if that’s all you saw of the debate, you’d swear that Bush had won.
Like those shots of Melania entertaining the Cruz kids.

Now we know it was one establishment wife talking to another establishment wife. Why wouldn’t they be comfortable?
