“GW lost the first debate to Kerry pretty badly. But Laura at least evened the score for the night when she went over to speak with Theresa on stage.”

Now we know it was one establishment wife talking to another establishment wife. Why wouldn’t they be comfortable?

Theresa has never looked comfortable in public, from the clips I’ve seen of her. Whereas Laura did no matter with whom she was with.

Remember the awkward dinner at Wendy’s that the Kerrys and Edwards shared after securing their party’s nomination? Theresa was flummoxed by everything that was happening around her. She didn’t know what to do with a Frosty. Kerry looked embarrassed to even be there. The Edwards were doing well—because that was their signature anniversary treat.

Whatever their deep-seated establishment ties, at least the Bushes can rub elbows with everyday folks and pull it off. The Kerrys can’t, it showed, and little tells like that reinforced the public’s favorability of the Bushes over the Kerrys.

At least we got the lesser of two evils in 2004!
