Georgetown Professor Michael Eric Dyson is proposing the idea that white people should have an Individual Reparations Account to make donations to black institutions and individuals.
The idea is part of his forthcoming book, Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America.
Dyson made the argument during an interview with Ana Marie Cox in the January 8 edition of the New York Times Magazine.
From the interview:
At the end of your sermon, you do a benediction section, in which you talk about making reparations on the local and individual level: donating to groups like the United Negro College Fund or a scholarship program, but also, to cite your example from the book, paying the black person who cuts your grass double what you might ordinarily pay. That gave me pause!
Good! I used to say in church, If the sermon aint making you a little bit uncomfortable, it aint effective. Look, if it doesnt cost you anything, youre not really engaging in change; youre engaging in convenience. Youre engaged in the overflow. Im asking you to do stuff you wouldnt ordinarily do. Im asking you to think more seriously and strategically about why you possess what you possess.
I agree with reparations, but maybe this is my white privilege speaking: I cant imagine actually doing that.
That is what I meant by an I.R.A.: an individual reparations account. You aint got to ask the government, you dont have to ask your local politician this is what you, an individual, conscientious, woke citizen can do.
But charity cant be the end of it, right? The Koch brothers gave the United Negro College Fund $25 million, but I doubt you would consider them woke.

The Emancipation Proclamation (EO) didn’t free any slaves either.
“Effect” are “free” are two different things. If a simple EO was all that was needed the 13th amendment wouldn’t have been.
No, they were not free, no more than any other illegal executive order is not enforceable.
I would hate to guess why you think an executive order freeing the slaves of armed insurrectionists would be illegal, but the fact remains that many commanders of Union forces freed the slaves coming within their lines before January 1, 1963, and all commanders did so following that date. This created the anomaly of slaves in the states of the Confederacy being freed before slaves in states such as Delaware and Kentucky which remained in the Union but tolerated slavery until passage of the 13th Amendment, well after Appomattox.
No, I am talking about a mass exodus of black voters if Trump is successful revitalizing cities. Trump has his sights set on urban areas.
For some white people, IRA refers to the Irish Republican Army.
You don't want one of those over here.
Public assistance is certainly a bribe to keep ferals at bay (of all colors). Reparations wouldn’t address anything because people who make bad decisions won’t stop because they have money. A month later they’d be broke and demanding more...
I understand; a small exodus of black voters to Trump, and even more who simply sat out the election, cost Hillary and the Dems because it cost them PA, MI, and WI (and almost MN).
