Santa Monica topped notoriously expensive San Francisco and New York City to claim the highest rent prices in America according to a report from rental website Apartment Guide.
The coastal city led all other markets with average rent prices of $4,799 for a one-bedroom unit, with Venice not far behind at No. 5 with mean prices around $3,923. Both topped San Francisco, which came in at No. 6 with average rents of $3,880.
New York City took second place with mean rents at $4,563, followed by nearby Long Beach, New York, and Great Neck, New York, at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively.

Pretty much the world’s most perfect climate.
You do NOT want to live in SaMo. There is no parking, the beaches are dirty, everyone is lib to a ridiculous caricature, they loooooove smelly, deranged, violent homeless people, and nothing there is of decent value. Everything is overpriced beyond belief.
The same weather can be had in the South Bay for much less, with normal people, and plenty of free parking (not talking about actual beach parking).
That was my reaction. Here's how I think of Long Beach:

Santa Monica is a beach community directly west of Beverly Hills and Hollywood. Not very surprising that the prices for housing would be way up there.
Wow. Rental crookery. I could own 3-4 homes paying nearly the same total amount of that rent.

What easier way to keep the riff raff out of the neighborhood. The same riff raff they claimed they will go to the mat for.
Oddly, micro apartments and homes are not a big thing out here. Coincidentally I have been reading about this for the last 3 or 4 days. Micro housing is big on the east coast, Seattle and San Francisco [which is a long way from LA/Santa Monica].
Real estate has been going crazy in LA. I’m single but i bought and sold 3 homes in 6 years because the prices were going through the roof. Since I have retired, I’ve stopped.
In the past 4 to 5 years, building is crazy. Mostly apartments, then homes, and non-stop building business in downtown LA ... and the burst of restaurants! I’ve lived here my whole life, over 60 years, and I’never seen anything like it.
WHERE though? Location, location, location is true! I was born here and can’t think of a reason to leave!
I was in Santa Monica a few years ago and saw a place that was literally a single-car garage conversion they were asking $1.5 million for. It was at least two blocks from “the beach” and a total sh-thole.
And when the sun goes down, all you’d have is a fancy garage in [shudder] California.
Better beach locations down the coast in Orange County, for less rent. (still high by national standards, but less than filthy Lost Angeles county such as Santa Monica, Venice etc.)
Seal Beach, Sunset Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point and San Clemente.
I shared a ride over the holidays with a girl who lives in San Francisco. She works in the same office complex where Uber is based.
She pays $3200 for a 500 square foot apartment. She says she tried a “roommate” sharing service. A 2br apartment with 3 strangers runs $8k a month...$2 grand each. She is thinking seriously about moving back to Florida.
Wow, back in the 1970’s I lived in Venice (one week), Santa Monica (about 9 months), and Hollywood (about 11 months). Thought the rent was high then but nothing like now!
