As day follows day and January 20 approaches, my colleagues and students experience something along the lines of Shakespeare's Sonnet 60: "Like as the waves make toward the pebbled shore, / So do our minutes hasten to their end." As far as they're concerned, the ascent of Donald Trump spells D-O-O-M.
It is easy to understand why they believe it. Professors and administrators at the best universities in the land have gone so deeply into identity politics that they can only regard him as an atavistic clod. They have raised the ordinary frictions of daily affairs into a melodrama of microaggression, heteronormativity, and ableism, and Trump won't respect the new rules. They create safe spaces for all my university library brought dogs in before finals so students might drop by, cuddle, and de-stress and now every presidential tweet and interview promises to despoil those spaces.

You may be right.
Until recently, the debate between "Left" and "Right" was restricted to two flavors of globalism. The globalist left wanted internationalism with more bureacracy and government regulation. The globalist right wanted internationalism with a little less bureaucratic oversight and regulation. Neither questioned the fundamental assumption that destroying national sovereignty, opening the borders, and outsourcing money and industry were fundamentally good things.
Now, instead of their fake debate over tactics, we have a real debate over the assumptions. That's why so many establishment Republicans covertly (and sometimes not so covertly) supported Hillary, and why European pseudo-conservatives like Merkel will eventually form coalitions with Socialists against rising nationalist parties.
The problem with college students is that they all think outside the box the same way, which isn't really thinking outside the box at all.
I like THAT... Liberal losers who couldn’t get or keep a job (of any kind) except on a university campus, telling everyone ELSE how to live and what to think!
Commitment becomes hysterical when those who have nothing to give advocate generosity, and those who have nothing to give up preach renunciation.

For instance, Johnny has a silver tongue-ring, and the holes in his earlobes are stretched out about 1 inch. His pal Joey is very different - he has a gold tongue-ring in his ear lobes are stretched 1.5 inches. That's their "individuality."
Bigger doom: Trump appointees will be the ones appointing the people who review research grant proposals.
Research projects that do not convincingly specify how they will help Make America Great Again will NOT get funding.
Yep.
We have always heard the moaning about "diversity."
Well, diversity of THOUGHT is what is important, not skin color diversity. Diversity of thought CAN happen anywhere, if people are given the chance to think that way.
Those college students will change like magic when they go job hunting. You KNOW that.
Back in the 90’s, some liberal put out a bumper sticker in blue with white letters that said “Celebrate Diversity.” Like the pod people in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, every liberal soon had to have a “Celebrate Diversity” bumper sticker on their car. Until one day someone pointed out on the radio, “Has anyone noticed that all those “Celebrate Diversity” bumper stickers look exactly alike?” Almost by the next day after I heard that, the bumper stickers were gone.
HAHAHA!
Precious!
Diversity in appearance ... uniformity in thought.
I would not doubt that
Thanks for my first big laugh of the day. And, I wish it would happen just like that.
