ierra travelers trapped by back-to-back storms that dropped more than 2 feet of snow have a brief window to pass before the arrival of a weather system Saturday so wet forecasters are calling it an "atmospheric river."
Up to 12 inches of rain below 8,500 feet is expected, and massive amounts of snow up to 6 feet above that elevation. A fifth, colder storm two days behind will drop yet more heavy snow.
Its a once-in-10-year event, said Zach Tolby, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno. Its the strongest storm weve seen in a long time, the kind of setup we look for to get significant flooding.
The atmospheric river, or Pineapple Express, will be felt across much of California this weekend, though rains will be much heavier in the north than in the south.
Tolby said the storm is packing the same wallop as an atmospheric river that hit Northern California a decade ago that caused $300 million in damage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The weather people WHINE when there is ONE drop less than normal and WHINE when there is ONE drop more than normal.
WHEN did "weather" replace real news?
It ALWAYS storms in winter. North Dakota is ALWAYS a zillion degrees below freezing every winter. Weather patterns are know entities. Tornados, hurricanes, storm = weather. Big deal.
Supposedly, it would take 40 days and 40 nights of extreme blizzard snow for California to get out of this record drought, provided the Sierra snow does not melt too quickly.
All fine until you wish to sell your house in California, then you would be required to replace all toilets with ultra-low flow toilets per California regulations prior to the sale.
...so basically 3-700 sq. ft. fixer-uppers and a Prius?
I plan to hike down to the Santa Ana River and watch the (huge) homeless camp float down to the Pacific. Not that shopping carts float very well.
No one has yet figured out why these clowns don’t push their carts to high ground when the river rises.
So MOVE. No one FORCES you to live in California.
Or do you just enjoy complaining about something you can't change? Move to where they have 10 feet of snow. Move to where it's 110 degrees in the summer. It's your very own choice to stay in California where taxes are high.
SURELY you can get another job in ONE of the other 49 states! Why not leave this "dumbass state" and stop complaining?
By the way, I LOVE kittykats!
Exactly. I've been hearing about this stupid drought for the entire 35 years since I moved here. (If it's yellow, its mellow. If it's brown flush it down.)
They are too stupid to capture the water flowing down the LA River & Santa Ana River into the ocean.
Drought gives them a reason to hype the panic & raise our taxes. But we still have funds for that Browndoggle slow-train to Fresno and hiring Holder to keep criminal illegal aliens, and money for the homeless and, and, and.......
You be right, and we are especially blessed, we have the CAL EPA!
That does explain why Folsom and Natomas Dams have opened their spillways and they’re testing the gates at Sacramento Weir to open it up fast in case this storm causes a fast rise in both the American and Sacramento Rivers.
Great! I would have ocean front property...err nearly ocean front property.
Totally agree. Everything the government does is all about controlling the masses. Unfortunately there are many idiots out there that believe the government.
Damn those Russians! Now you’re telling me they got into Rove’s weather machine? Did HRC sell it to them?
In CA we are in a permanent drought of intelligence. And once in a while it rains a lot.
Seriously, though, this is supposed to be a whopper of a storm.
I have been accused of being a smeltist. Can you imagine?
..Tornados, hurricanes, storm = weather. Big deal......”
That’s probably what Noah’s neighbors said years ago?
“I like my 3 gallon per flush toilets ...”
All fine until you wish to sell your house in California, then you would be required to replace all toilets with ultra-low flow toilets per California regulations prior to the sale.”
t’s not a big deal, its easy to replace with low flow when the time comes. And I can swap out all the toilets in the house in a couple of hours myself. So, what’s the issue?
I left California in 1992, moved to Alaska.
Problem is a lot of trash has been going to Alaska in recent years.
“Totally agree. Everything the government does is all about controlling the masses. Unfortunately there are many idiots out there that believe the government.”
Exactly. People have become sheep. And they don’t realize they are being controlled and our thinking influenced...I imagine I am victim too.
California seasons include: Burning, mud slides, flooding, and shaking with long dry periods in between sometimes.
