WASHINGTON Sen. Ted Cruz is stepping up his efforts to impose term limits on Congress, calling for a constitutional amendment on the issue.
The amendment, proposed Tuesday with Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis of Florida, would limit senators to two six-year terms and House members to three two-year terms.
D.C. is broken, Cruz said in a written statement. The American people resoundingly agreed on Election Day, and President-elect Donald Trump has committed to putting government back to work for the American people. It is well past time to put an end to the cronyism and deceit that has transformed Washington into a graveyard of good intentions.
The Texas Republicans proposal follows through on a Washington Post column he co-authored with DeSantis in December previewing his action.
With term limits, we will have more frequent changes in leadership and within congressional committees, giving reformers a better chance at overcoming the Beltway inertia that resists attempts to reduce the power of Washington, the pair wrote.
Six Republican senators cosponsored the amendment.
The proposal would need to clear several steep hurdles to come to fruition. Constitutional amendments require approval of two-thirds of both the House and the Senate and then need to be ratified by three-quarters of state legislatures or a convention of the states.

Sounds good to me. Chance of passing? Zero.
One term for Senators, two terms for Representatives.
Sounds good to me if we can put a limit on staffers too.
We have what may be a chance to control all three houses for the next generation. This is NOT a priority, in my opinion.
Repeal the 17th.
He needs to add no retirements plans to that too.
No one should get a retirement plan for serving a couple of terms.
And chop POTUS down to a single four year term.
No more Imperial Presidencies.
No need or point to amending the Constitution as you can pretend it says whatever you want.
New words will have the same weight as the old ones. None.
Also, the 16th.
Good point.
I believe that I read the Term Limits won’t effect current members of Congress and Senate. Only future people will be affected.
This is the only guaranteed effective way to “drain the swamp.” Everything else is pretty much lip service.
Repeal the 17th and leave it to the states. No need for term limits.
Repeal the 17th amendment first...then we can talk.
Good idea in my book...End of “professional politicians”....
Nor should we have to support former Speaker’s of the House for life either. Strip those perks away as well.
Sounds good but it will never happen. And he knows it.
It may be easier to get it passed if that’s the case. But getting it passed in the required number of states will take so long, that it may never happen in my lifetime. I’m 68.
