Bevin, GOP lawmakers push anti-union bills as angry workers chant in hallways

FRANKFORT Angry union workers packed the hallways of Kentucky’s Capitol Annex on Wednesday as Republican lawmakers pushed ahead with bills that would ban mandatory union dues and repeal a law that requires regional prevailing wages for workers on public construction projects.

The chants of union workers were little deterrent to Gov. Matt Bevin and his GOP colleagues in the Kentucky House and Senate, who have made approving the bills their top priority of the 2017 General Assembly.

Shouts and banging could be heard from the hallway, but the meeting room itself was packed with supporters as the House Committee on Economic Development and Workforce Investment passed House Bill 1, which would allow workers to avoid paying union dues even if they work under a union-negotiated contract, and House Bill 3, which would repeal the prevailing wage law.

Members of Americans for Prosperity in Kentucky, a conservative political advocacy group, had gathered for a breakfast of Chick-fil-A in the committee room, ensuring every seat was filled by the time workers opposed to the bill arrived.

The bills are expected to get a vote on the House floor Thursday.

Angry union workers...

Shouldn't that be: Angry union "workers"...?

This happened 2 years ago in WV with prevailing wage and right to work. It became law and the dems ran against it this last election. They failed miserably.

Similar situations, West VA. finally had a Republican house and senate for the first time in 81 years.

I can honestly say that I have never “chanted”.

I have. We were protesting a liberal rep here in CT. Every time someone would come out I would start, "How did he buy your vote!?!?"

The looks on their faces were telling.

I think there is a bigger chance of violence from union goons than there is just about from any other group. I’ve seen these guys in action. They are filled with hate.

They are filled with hate.

Yes, and they hate the taxpayers (they should love us)

One word for the President and Republican governors:

DECERTIFY

(It's only the fair thing to do for us)

Hopefully this will pass and Kentucky can finally start to compete for new companies building in our state.

The next efforts of Bevin and the Republican legislature should do is tax reform and auto insurance reform. Kentucky is the Taxachussetts of the south.

People living on the border of other states especially TN will give a TN address and tag their vehicles in TN. In Kentucky you get a yearly property tax bill on your vehicle. When you buy your vehicle you pay taxes on the full sticker price not on the actual price negotiated, then comes the yearly greetings based on the blue book value.

In TN depending on the county you tag your car you get a flat $50 bill and the morons in Frankfort just can’t figure out why people would want to tag their cars in TN. I had an 06 Grand Marquis and for three years in a row the state said my car went UP in value! I called and asked if they were serious, how does a Grand Marquis appreciate in value? They blathered around about blue book and essentially said screw you pay it or else.
