(CNSNews.com) – As the Obama Administration comes to a close, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is pushing ahead with its plan to restrict more federal land from future mining operations by putting 10 million acres in six states off limits.

“As part of its continuing efforts to conserve habitat vital to healthy populations of the Greater Sage-Grouse in the West, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) today announced the draft proposal to withdraw a subset of lands that are sage-grouse strongholds from future mining claims,” read a press release posted on the BLM website on Thursday.

This is blatantly criminal. The sage grouse is common over millions of square miles.

Fake Biology isn't interested in your petty facts!

“I hope President Trump reverses this nonsense.”

All Trump needs to do is to remind the BLM eco-Nazis that only Congress can write law. End of story.

Uranium Sage Grouse, on the other hand, is rare.

This is outrageous. I would love to hear Ted Cruz’s opinion on this from the SCOTUS bench.

From now on all monuments, national parks, and protected wildernesses should be designated either east of the Appalachians, or west of the Sierra Madre Mountains.

“Ten million acres removed from mining because of a stupid sage grouse? “

They’re wily prey and not at all stupid for birds that live on the ground. Especially when they can sorta fly.

Maybe...but wolf populations are not where grouse are/were. I used to love hunting them as a kid. But Nat gas has really hurt them...they simply aren’t there in numbers they once were...

The big companies were all for the regs, they knew it would cut down the competition. They don’t write the laws but they use regulation to fill in the framework that Congress set up. They have power of law you also never get of a judge and jury. You go in front of a judge who is employee of the fed and state who is an administrative judge. Take a guess on what his decision is going to be

That thing running the DOI sure is an oddball to look at.

You’d think they’d wait things out to see what Trump does with the DOI, certainly he’s not keeping that odd duck on.

I suspect the BLM is in for a big surprise in a few days.

I shot my first sage grouse this last fall very near a large mining area in northeastern Nevada. Big as a chicken! Breast meat tastes like dark turkey meat only not so greasy.

Eh? You were hunting Sage Grouse, or, wolves?

I'll assume you meant Sage Grouse. :-)

It is true that Sage Grouse pops. are down, and even extirpated in some areas.

OTOH, the FWS found in 2015:

"A status review conducted by the Service has found that the greater sage-grouse remains relatively abundant and well-distributed across the species’ 173-million acre range and does not face the risk of extinction now or in the foreseeable future.

The Service’s decision follows an unprecedented conservation partnership across the western United States that has significantly reduced threats to the greater sage-grouse across 90% of the species’ breeding habitat. The Service has determined that protection for the greater sage-grouse under the Endangered Species Act is no longer warranted and is withdrawing the species from the candidate species list.[58]"

https://www.fws.gov/greatersagegrouse/

Now, all that said, in my neck of the woods, some of the best habitat around, for various wildlife, is on restored strip mine lands. Would not land where nat. gas is extracted simply be subject to the same sort of restoration, or even optimization? It seems that this could be even better for the bird, than simply withdrawing the land from extraction of underground resources.
