Ford Motor Company's cancellation of plans to build a $1.6 billion auto manufacturing plant in San Luis Potosi has sounded alarms throughout Mexico.
Even as the country is being rocked by rowdy nationwide protests against a Jan. 1 gasoline price hike, the Ford news led the front pages of Mexico's most influential newspapers on Wednesday, and they tied the development directly to President-elect Donald Trump.
"Trump leaves Mexico without 3,600 jobs," read the headline on El Universal. "Ford's braking jolts the peso," said Reforma, referring to the Mexican currency's nearly 1 percent slump following the news.
"The jobs created in Mexico have contributed to maintaining manufacturing jobs in the United States which otherwise would have disappeared in the face of Asian competition," the Mexico Economy Department said.
Mexicans have been nervous about Trump's tough rhetoric toward their country, including disparaging remarks about immigrants who come to the U.S. illegally and vows to wall off the border and renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, upsetting ties with what is by far Mexico's largest trading partner.
Two weeks before inauguration, the scuttling of the planned Ford factory and Trump's pressure on General Motors should be a "much-needed wake-up call," said Mexico analyst Alejandro Hope.
It shows "how much actual leverage Trump has within specific companies, which is far greater than what Mexican elites thought until recently," Hope said. "They claimed that at the end of the day economic interests would prevail over political messaging. That's clearly not the case."

Mexico should not fear anything. It might offend them. After all, they are entirely good people looking for a better life. At our expense.
Hey Jim - Should I call the whammbulance?
They should BEG to become the 51’st state.
Then Canada.
Then keep adding countries.
If they want global one-world government then they can all apply to become states who strictly obey the US constitution.
If Trump is able to cajole companies into repatriating that is good for US.
We should care. But we need to take care of America first. A weakened America is no good to anybody.
Once America has it's industries back, there will be opportunities to give jobs to Mexico.
And no one is saying Mexico can't trade with the U.S.. What we are saying is that if you are going to sell into the U.S., you need to pay a tariff to help support the country. You can't move manufacturing to your country and expect to sell back into the U.S. without paying for the privilege to access our markets.
LOL!
You’re already on life supports. I don’t think a “whammbulance” will do you much good.
Interesting that the preference is Asia over Mexico. Must be a legitimate reason for shipping products thousand of miles across the sea from countries that don’t like America vs 50 miles across an open and porous border.
Mexico now has people in every state kidnapping and killing folks. Why move assets there?
Do you have any evidence of federal interference? Or did Don Lemon tell you there was?
Perhaps Trump told Carrier & Ford that he was serious about changing the tax code, repatriating corporate funds, and rolling back regulations & based on Trump's record, they actually believed him.
There was an "expert" on FBN a couple of weeks ago who pointed out that China's labor costs were increasing, and with the cost of moving goods to the US market, companies producing goods in China don't have the margins they used to have.
Yeah that was B.S. LINE that the Globalist used to SELL IT...
I knew it back then it was bad, and no one could explain to me how it was good for jobs in the U.S.
Even Ross Perot tried to warn us, and Limbaugh attacked him and praised Bush.
Good question, but should be answered by the enterprise decision-makers in the voluntary cooperation of the marketplace free from government interference.
That would be terrible, and thankfully the politicians on both sides (Mexico and Canada) do not want that too.
Can you imagine how many people it would add to the welfare roster? Our Republic would be gone.
Damn but it's nice having REAL AMERICAN adults in charge once again!
The government interference is on our side. If one side uses $200 a month salaries and we pay $2,000, then we are at the disadvantage of all third world places without import taxes IMO.
No, I don’t have evidence of unconstitutional federal interference, but the absence of a dialogue about it is a concern because the Right has a nasty habit of turning a blind eye to GOP Presidents launching unconstitutional federal acts. The potential should be addressed
We should be vigilant about reinstating the Constitution as the Rule of Law against the feds in our country. That issue and dismantling the mostly unconstitutional portion of the federal government trumps all other politcal issues
While I do not care one whit for the corrupt politicians in Mexico, there are a great many innocent civilians down there who are bearing the brunt of too many years of “trade deals” that have benefitted those at the top only! Much in the same way that the US manufacturing industry has been decimated and millions of blue collar workers have watched their factories close...
My hope is that Trump will actually re-establish some semblance of law and order and promote fair trade deals that will bring back jobs for Americans, which in turn may force Mexico to clean up their own government and take care of their own people.
Actually shutting down the cartels rather than arming them and turning a blind eye to their actions would be a great start!
One thing is that in China you don’t have to worry about your execs being kidnapped. And you don’t have to worry about your trucks being hijacked.
Mexico would be the ideal place to offshore work, you would think, except that it isn’t.
EXACTLY how the Right greases the skids for dictatorial tyrants like Obama.
When it comes to the feds, there's only ONE issue: IS IT CONSTITUTIONAL as written as originally intended and understood.
Making "advantage" the issue regardless of the constitutionality of the act is exactly how the Right greases the skids for dictatorial tyrants like Obama who hate the Constitution and individual freedom which the Constitution legally protects.
