President-elect Trump is on a roll today. Following House Republican's vote to strip the Ethics Office of independence, Trump lashed out with a tweet suggesting Congress' time be better spent on other things... and just minutes ago, following an emergency meeting, Republicans have confirmed the amendment has been pulled.
As a reminder, House Republicans abruptly voted on Monday night to eliminate the independence of the Office of Congressional Ethics, the chambers nonpartisan ethics board which investigates lawmakers' alleged misconduct, largely stripping it of its power, leading to pushback from Democrats and government watchdog groups. House Republicans, meeting as a group Monday night, approved an amendment from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte that would place the office under the oversight of the lawmaker-run House Ethics Committee.

Reporting to the president?
It wasn't going to go all the way away - besides, he's telling them to focus on the priorities instead of grandstanding - tax reform and ObamaCare repeal are priorities.
My thoughts exactly. There was a lot of Congress bashing and “ what about draining the swamp?” that was being expressed by the left on Facebook and left-leaning websites. Trump looks like a unifier and a good guy.
It was a horse’s patute move to take this action in the first place.
We want Congress to be accountable, and this sent the exact opposite message.
Here Trump is talking about draining the swamp, and the Republicans on Capital Hill were sending the message they didn’t want independent oversight.
The Republicans on Capital Hill have been tone deaf for so long, they just don’t get it. AT ALL!
Trump may have done this strictly because of the optics problem.

I agree with this also. Probably not the right time. However, Pelosi did create this ethics committee and I’m sure it reflects her values so I do expect a more “subtle assessment” coming from Repubs.
Congressional ethics? Now there’s an oxymoron if ever there was one.
Reporting to a special council, appointed by the AG.
Trump DID NOT want to start a fight over this on the FIRST DAY!!! He is right if you are going to have a fight make it over SOMETHING that TRULY matters to the American People!!! ALL of these BASTARDS in office are corrupt some on OUR SIDE need to GO, Graham, and McShame are at the top of the list these two ARE IN BED with defense contractors and these contractors OVER CHARGING the government for EVERYTHING then greasing their slimy paws!!!!
Thanks...now I understand.
Glad that helped. Thanks.
Can’t judge everything on they hate it so you must like it and vice versa.
He vows to drain the swamp and the first thing these clowns want to do is protect themselves from being drained.
I’ll tell you why its a victory. It means they’re scared. Dirty S.O.B.s
exactly. i don’t care who introduced it.
Thanks....I see that now.
It just means they will deal with it later. More important things must be worked on now.
“Trump is the most masterful strategist this Republic has seen since Washington.”
During the campaign, Trump was extremely vocal about a rigged election. I wonder if he did that to goad Obama into making the statement that it’s impossible for our election to be rigged. Now, after the Dems lost, and are screaming, “rigged!”, Obama’s statement can be played over and over again. Maybe Trump was playing them all along and they didn’t realize it.
Another Trump Win!
If Ryan wants to keep showing his independence from Trump, by laughing off Trumps campaign promises (particularly the wall, but also others) - then Trump will make his life VERY UNPLEASANT.
Classic Trump!
There certainly should not be the appearance that the PUBES are eliminating an ethics oversight committee. How stupid are they!?
