A giant wave of store closures is about to hit the US

Retailers are bracing for a fresh wave of store closures at the start of the new year.

The industry is heading into 2017 with a glut of store space as shopping continues to shift online and foot traffic to malls declines, according to analysts ~SNIP~

Nearly every major department store, including Macy's, Kohl's, Walmart, and Sears, have collectively closed hundreds of stores over the last couple years to try and stem losses from unprofitable stores and the rise of ecommerce.

But the closures are far from over.

Macy's has already said that it's planning to close 100 stores, or about 15% of its fleet, in 2017. Sears is shuttering at least 30 Sears and Kmart stores by April, and additional closures are expected to be announced soon. CVS also said this month that it's planning to shut down 70 locations.

Mall stores like Aeropostale, which filed for bankruptcy in May, American Eagle, Chicos, Finish Line, Men's Wearhouse, and The Children's Place are also in the midst of multi-year plans to close stores.

Ebay and Amazon dont deliver burgers..so why are Burger Kings closing?

**************

I know of a Wendys that closed, tore down the old facility and has now reopened in a newly
completed facility. Some places may begin to do that rather than try to limp along with
partial remodeling.

We inherited a 1990 washer. It broke last year. Looked around for a new one but they were too expensive. Ordered about $25 worth of parts online and fixed it ourselves. Knock on wood, it’s still working.

I love Krispy Kreme, they’re headquartered locally and I’ve enjoyed them all my life. So, it pains me to relate that sometimes, old restaurant locations have to be demolished and rebuilt. There was a great, original location in Greensboro, NC, very prominent and retro-cool looking. They absolutely could not get the roach infestation under control. They tore it down and built another, not nearly as compelling as the original. Could have replicated it I suppose, but that would be out of compliance with current branding. Pity.

Brick and mortar stores are dying because its more convenient to shop online and your purchases come to you.

I hope not. I like being able to pick up and handle an item--especially when shopping for clothes, since you can't try on an article of clothing through the screen. And I don't like to have to wait for something to be shipped to me and risk having it being stolen by porch pirates if it arrives at my doorstep when I'm not at home.

Good grief, every time ya turn around, a new CVS, Walgreens, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King, Walmart is popping up.

Man oh man, around the Houston area, find a few thousand acres and the dedgum developers will latch hold of it and every square inch they can lay concrete...they will. Then comes the Walgreens.....and the rest.

Oh, did I mention, a Messy-can restaurant on every street corner? I like Messy-can food like the rest of’em, but it's a lil ridiculous.

I have to drive 4 towns over for a Taco Bell or McDonalds. Can make a bean burrito at home much quicker and cheaper than making the drive.

“It never ceases to amaze me, at the local Walgreen’s, they hand someone their cigarette purchase, and utter the motto “Be Well”.”

True, and they also say it when someone buys soda and potato chips. Weird.

“And Costco stores do not seem to be closing.”

Costco has a business model that works. People shop where they have a perception of good value. The stores mentioned have been effing their customers for years, so it isn’t surprising that they are going out of business
Now if only the major newspapers would go under, life would be good and we’d be saving millions of trees at the same time.

I guess it depends where you live. I have a running gag with the local cashiers, which one of us will say it first, at the end of the transaction.

there will soon be 'clothing/prescription/electronics/etc' deserts near or in the 'hood'...

Shaq just bought the big flagship Krispy Kreme store that has been here in ATL on Ponce De Leon forever. It’s awesome.
