Russians breach Vermont utility

Russian hackers tied to recent cyberattacks on U.S. political organizations breached a Vermont utility, the Washington Post reported Friday.

A code associated with the Russian hacking operation aimed at the U.S. presidential election, which the intelligence community has named “Grizzly Steppe,” was detected within the Vermont system.

The Russians did not disrupt electrical operations, officials told the Post.

According to the Burlington Free Press, the city-owned Burlington Electric was the target of the hack.

Vermont Public Service Commissioner Christopher Recchia said malware was discovered on a laptop that was not connected to the grid's operations.

"The grid is not in danger," Recchia said. "The utility flagged it, saw it, notified appropriate parties and isolated that one laptop with that malware on it. . ."

First of all, I don’t believe that this is the work of Russians. I might believe that this is the work of Democrats who are unhappy that Trump won.
Second, don’t any of these utilities have a a redundant, non-internet control system? Why would anyone allow a system as critical as a power utility to be wholly under online control?

So...if I understand this "international crisis", a worker at the utility was searching and downloading russian babe porn on his laptop. A piece of code (described as malware) was found on his laptop. Ok, then, nuke Russian and murder millions. This has to stop! I'd call: FalseNewsFalseNewsFalseNewsFalseNewsFalseNews!!!

Dumb story meant to mislead the LIVs into believing the Russian hacking narrative.

Most ransomware comes from the Ukraine.

"I have no idea if this story is true or not.:

The story is probably true in the sense that the utility's security software detected a virus or malware in a computer at the facility, but false in the implication that it was a targeted attack by the Russian government to penetrate the utility grid.

It was probably the result of the routine phishing that goes on every day, from countless criminal sources, and which your own security software is designed to prevent.

Would the purveyors of this extremely misleading news agree that our colleges and universities should stop teaching math and computer science to students from hostile foreign powers (China, Iran, etc.)?

What was the writers point? If they can hack a utility, they can hack an election?

But then again, there is that word, “IF.”. If you look specifically at the Washington Compost (and others), you will see regarding these topics the words, “if,” “possibly and possible,” “may, and maybe,” etc.

In no way can anyone claim the results of the election (voters and counting), were tampered with by a foreign government.

Methinks propaganda, and not fake news.
