JANUARY 1, 1966

The initial version of this song was folk-based and received no notice. It looked like the latest incarnation of Tom & Jerry would fail as miserably as the first.

While the guys were in Miami on tour, back in New York, producer Roy Halee added a rock guitar and drum track to the song. Thanks to Bob Dylan’s success with folk-rock during the summer with “Like a Rolling Stone,” Halee thought that this treatment was what the song needed. When the guys heard it break on the radio at Miami’s WQAM, they were furious. But when the record took off and the money started pouring in, they changed their minds.

Good evening, Kathy!

*HUGS*

Happy Almost New Years to you as well! We're almost ready although our internet was down again last evening and this morning.

This was one of the greatest studio bands of the Sixties. It was a mixture of producer Lou Adler, the Wrecking Crew performing their best backup work, and songwriter John Phillips. On a personal basis, John was a drug addict and a monster, but his genius was unmistakable.

Denny Doherty was a standout tenor, John’s wife Michelle, in spite of her weak voice, had a gift for harmony, and Cass Eliot had the voice of an opera singer. Her early death from a heart attack ended what would have been a great career.

This song features Mama Cass who just tears it up.

Howdy! I’m kind of surprised...I was sort of slow on the uptake. Watching the SWFL cam. Mom is sleeping like a baby tonight...which is just as well, since she’ll be feeding baby[ies] 24/7 starting tomorrow! :)

Howdy do, Conor. *Hugz*

Bummer about your internet misbehaving. Hope they have it straightened out once and for all now.

Hard to believe this year is almost over, isn’t it? Here’s hoping for a great 2017!

I was once in a record store for collectors in Saticoy, Calif. when one of the Tokens called the owner. She announced who called, and all of us customers shouted into the phone, “we love the Tokens!”

Was it one of the Margo brothers, Medress or Siegel?

Unlike Diana Ross’ thin, reedy soprano, Martha Reeves’ throaty contralto absolutely commanded respect. You sat up and listened when she sang. The girls would achieve their greatest success later in the year, but this entry gives a good hint of what early Motown sounded like.

In 1983, Reeves performed in a concert of '60's stars at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif. She stole the show and had half the audience dancing in the aisles as she sang her big hits.

LOL! Looks like there wasn’t any competition for it. I wasn’t home or I’d given ya a run for the money. LOL!

I can’t get that darn SWFL site to behave and have given up on it. The stream keeps going blank after a few seconds.
Still waiting for them to fix the light at the NE site so we can see it at night. Those eaglets are growing FAST.
