JANUARY 1, 1963

A year before the first wave of the British Invasion, this instrumental from the UK hit the charts in the excitement of the launching of the first communications satellite. This was what brought drummer Clem Cattini to the attention of British record producers. He became one of the most desired session drummers in the game, and at age 80 he is still active.

Before Telstar, there was Echo 1. It was a shiny ball that bounced radio signals.

Dad worked for Bell labs that was involved with its development, and he brought me a piece of the fabric that was the skin of the satellite. He dared me to tear it.

I worked on it for three days, but finally succeeded!

I remember seeing Echo I in the sky one night. I must have been in grade school.

Unlike Diana Ross’ thin, reedy soprano, Martha Reeves’ throaty contralto absolutely commanded respect. You sat up and listened when she sang. The girls would achieve their greatest success later in the year, but this entry gives a good hint of what early Motown sounded like.

JANUARY 1, 1965

Back in the days of groups named after cars, this band had their one huge hit in 1958. In 1964, they teamed with the producing and song writing team of Randazzo and Weinstein who gave them a very different sound, based in the studio with a very high level of production. They had two very good years.
