You would have a coronary during RIMPAC exercises. Japanese submarine and surface warships come streaming into the harbor. Their sailors proudly line the decks in white ubiforms.

I once saw a picture, maybe 10 years ago or so, of the JDS Haruna (DDH-141) being guided by an American tugboat into Pearl Harbor. And the irony struck me. There used to be another ship named Haruna, a battleship, and the Americans fought tooth and nail to keep her as far away from Pearl Harbor as possible. And now, here we are welcoming her successor with open arms. It really drove home to me the reality that the war is long over, and Japan is now one of our closest allies.

Their diesel-electric subs are very strange looking, angular above the surfaced water line, unlike our cylindrical shapes.

I wondered if they knew they were passing over the grave of one of their midget subs just before they entered the harbor channel.
