President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said on Friday that a statement by Donald J. Trump, the American president-elect, that the United States should expand its nuclear capabilities was not a surprise because he had said the same thing during the election campaign.
Asked about the American election, Mr. Putin, who has made no secret of his distaste for Hillary Clinton, said her defeat was a humiliation for the Democratic Party.
The Russian president, speaking at his annual marathon news conference, also said that Russia would continue to modernize its armed forces, including nuclear weapons, but he added that the level of spending would diminish somewhat in coming years.
..
On the American election, Mr. Putin said the Democrats were trying to blame their defeat on external factors like Russia. He said his popularity among American Republicans was not personal, but a reflection of their worldview.
It means that a significant part of the American people have the same perception about how the world should be developing, he said. It is good that people support us in this, in terms of traditional values. He said it was a good basis for improving Russian-American relations.
Mr. Putin mocked recent statements by President Obama and others that former President Ronald Reagan would be turning in his grave over the support for Russia and for Mr. Putin among Republicans.
If anything, he said, it would be former presidents like Franklin D. Roosevelt who would be turning in their graves over the losses suffered by the Democratic Party.
Mr. Roosevelt united the country, Mr. Putin said, but the current administration divides it.

Ouch! Bitch slapped Obozo, Hilliary and the DNC all in one shot!..............
Everything said between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin about one another or in regards to each other’s country is trending well. It seems to indicate a good working relationship ahead. This sure sounds like winning and I for one am glad to hear it.
Vlad has studied his American History.
Which is more than you can say for most of the people here.
I think we should attempt to deal with the Russians as a different country than the USSR. There are many areas where we have shared interests, such as muslim terrorism. I don’t understand why we pushed Nato’s boundaries so far as to include former Soviet Republics.
It would make more sense to me to have amity with them instead of hostility. Russia is not financially capable of exerting influence like the old Soviet Union. Why not have policies that attempt to deal with them more favorable when possible?
In before the Putin is Hitler FR Beigade.
Putin is just as interested is staying alive as we are. He knows the only way this will be accomplished is through the retention of M.A.D. (Mutually Assured Destruction).
Nothing stops a bully from throwing a sucker punch is the knowledge that the victim is equally capable of returning that punch and bloodying up the bully - so it causes the bully to really think long and hard about whether he is willing to pay the price of a beat down.
The Juan Wing of FR?
Putin’s presser was three hours. Pres. Trump will be able to get his messages across in three Tweets. “Brevity is the soul of wit.” (Hamlet, Act. 2, Scene 2)
He’s as good at skewering the American left as Trump is, well, maybe more top line with Putin. I do tend to get a little unnerved when something sounds so tailor made, they’ve studied us well, though.
I think it’s a good thing, personally, to be able to work rationally with potential rivals on the world stage. But, make no mistake, they’re not our “friends.” We share common interests, at the moment.
Reading these things today I come to the realization that Putin is scary level smart.
I have more respect for the current Russian leader then the current President of the USA. I would never of believed that possible.
strictly speaking for myself, I would really prefer to have friendly relations with the Russian people. I have known plenty of Russian people. They’re a lot like us.
OK Obama you can leave now and HR will have your last pay check ready to go for the next 4 weeks. No need to come in the office anymore.
Putin blinked?
Found video of the Putin press conference with translation.

Will watch later.
Married to a Russian, I am looking forward to a closer, friendlier relationship with Christian Russia, proud defenders of Western culture. They have their faults but they're a lot more like us than different and given a choice between a relationship with Russia or relations with Islamic radicals and pussified, apologetic Western Euroweenies, I'll take Ivan and his really hot sister, Natasha.
We are going to have to coexist with Russia. We cannot coexist with Radical Islam. We can work with Russia. They will not be our friend. Nations do not have friends.
There is no reason we cannot achieve a posture of friendly rivals with them as opposed to the current DC poltical class overt hostility to Russia.
It time we realize the Russian are less our enemies then the Saudis who are trying to engineer a fight between the US and Russia over Syria
It said it was an annual thing he does.
Negotiations have begun and are proceeding well. And The Donald is not even sworn in yet.
Just wait until he gets up on solid ground and has the all-wheel traction engaged.
And the turbocharger kicks in.
I LOVE IT!!!
Russia and the Russian people are not our enemies. Radical Islam is. Time for this manufacture hostility to Russia in the US Political class, being pushed with Saudi money, to be neutralized. It time for the adults to be back in charge in DC.
