Cars are ridiculously too expensive. GM/Union made vehicles are frightening quality at best.
My 2005 Ford Focus has 180k miles with (barely) scheduled maintenance for <$10k. No rust after eleven New Hampshire winters. Today's cars are MUCH better.
As for cost, it's market driven. If you have a car purchase in your future, Ford is discounting the sticker by 25%. Still not cheap, but I can get an Explorer for a couple thousand more than I paid in 2002.
The villain in this slump is the Obama administration. This is continued fallout from the Cash for Clunkers fiasco. That expensive, land filling 'stimulus' shifted sales of cars and created a roller coaster demand cycle. Sucks for car makers and auto workers, but it's great for consumers. Simply time savings and purchases to coincide with the valleys in demand. I just bought an F150.
Happy shopping and Merry Christmas!

My problem is some really bad experiences with these cars, including the driver side door literally falling off. After that, bought a Lexus 4 vehicles since I have not considered a "big 3 purchase" since.
Wishing you and yours a wonderful Christmas - Cheers!
