William Burley, a 36-year-old man from California, has spent years ripping people off.
On Monday, Burley was sentenced to three years in jail for defrauding a Christian charity group who sought his Navy SEAL skills to help them rescue kidnapped aid workers in Somalia.

There are so many crazy impersonation stories out there, people pretending to be everything from doctors to pilots to special operations guys. Amazing what you can get away with (temporarily at least) if you’ve got the gumption to bypass the main road block — social convention — and just fake an identity.
I despise those “Stolen Valor” people. I’m a lowly ex-Aviation sailor from the 70’s and 80’s. I helped Marines off the flight deck so they could fight for me, my family, friends, and our Country. Anyone who claims such should be prosecuted and sent to jail. At my old age, if I encountered one, my fist would go to his jaw and hope I break it and I will pay the consequences. They deserve no mercy.
Mr Fakeseal...meet you new cell mate Ben Dover
I have one ex-Seal friend. I knew him for about ten years before he told me a story about his time on the teams.
That alone is proof he’s the real deal.
What a doofus-looking fake!
Good, but this is only a fraction of what he deserves.
I used to know a guy who was a UDT member (a seal before there were Seals) who spent time in SE Asia before the Vietnam war - 1959, I think. Because we “weren’t there” at that time, he received no benefits or recognition for his service, and rarely spoke of it.
He was a bitter man and I couldn’t blame him.
That’s too bad.
But since he signed up to do things that no one should ever find out about it...
I knew a UDT who set munitions on Normandy the night before the invasion. Apparently they swam in, set some munitions and then swam back to their boats. He was shot on a Higgins Boat the next morning and never actually landed at Normandy. He spent most of the war in the Pacific.
I’m with you all the way. While I was on Submarines (retired 93, STSCS(SS)), we did some “taxi” service for some interesting people.
What I would like to see is these fake Seals, USMC Recon, USA SOC, USAF SOC, etc. do is complete a specialty course with the real men who really do what these fakes impersonate.

HLB
That's actually a good idea. Make them go through basic and then on to Ranger school. They'd probably flunk out due to lack of motivation, but recycle them recycle them until they at least pass boot camp. And the judge assigns them to the Marines basic.
Hippy? Logger? Biker? How does that work?
Probably like me: Long haired Biker (65-75). Flight Deck Operator (75-87). Biker again (95-2000's).
Some years back, Free Republic people busted a guy with ribbons that didn’t make sense.
Me:
USMC, SGT (1970-1974)
USN, STSCS(SS), Ret 1993
Currently:

You definitely served beyond your call. I salute you, Senior Chief. Yeah, I know...don't salute you, you worked for a living...haha. How about a tip of the hat?
Sold my 1995 Wide Glide just last year. Now I'm just happy to be with my best friend (Wife) and my little doggie on the couch. Saw the World...been there, done that. I've been fortunate in life.
Is it common for vets to list medals on job applications?
