Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) said in a new interview that Donald Trump has taken a different tone as president-elect and may be leaving behind his campaign promise to drain the swamp.
Gingrich told NPR's "Morning Edition" that he was told Trump now says [the phrase] was cute, but he doesnt want to use it anymore.
Gingrich, who has been a close adviser to Trump, said he likes "drain the swamp" because it vividly illustrates the problem, because all people in this city who are the alligators are going to hate the swamp being drained.
But, you know, he is my leader, and if he decides to drop the swamp and the alligator I will drop the swamp and the alligator, he said.
Gingrich also said hed noticed Trumps change in attitude toward his supporters chanting lock her up at his post-election rallies, referring to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Maybe he feels that, as president, as the next president of the United States, that he should be marginally more dignified than talking about alligators in swamps, Gingrich said.

Trump can easily clarify this. Occasionally, Gingrich has said things that are critical of Trump in the past, although he doesn't sound critical here. I'm not sure if Gingrich is referring to the actual meaning behind the phrase or the phrase itself, but the phrase and sentiments behind it were a huge hit with supporters and (I believe) helped draw over some independents and Democrats.
For all the positives Newt can bring, he annoys the hell out of people with his need for attention and undermining comments as here.
Just “Drain The Swamp”, already.
if DJT doesn’t want to drain the swamp anymore,
we got rooked!
(but I do believe he is honest about wanting to do it!)
Notice how they twist newts ‘quote’.
When was the last time Newt had sit-down time (one on one) with Trump?
Is he faking more insider knowledge than he really has, as Rush strongly suggested today?
Newt pretty much got left on the sidelines. “Senior unofficial advisor” or whatever. Sure.
Anything to sell his books (and Calista’s) and get more facetime on TV.
And I like Newt. But please, don’t fake the influence and insider knowledge we don’t think you have. It’s showing.
I read English his comments not as Trump’s no longer going to drain the swamp with that he is no longer going to use those terms
He must do it. Otherwise his opponent in 4 years will have a field day.
Here come the Nervous Nellies in 3.....2.....1.....
Rush tackled this today, nothing to worry about. He says it right there, he doesn’t want to use the phrase anymore. The swamp is going to get drained.
This is extreme twisting of a narrative. They take a bit of comments from Gingrich about dropping use of a slogan to mean that a campaign promise is being dropped.
Total dishonesty.
I think he may not use the phrase “Drain the Swamp”, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.
Same with “Lock Her Up”.
I don’t think he has changed his mind about draining the swamp, I think he just doesn’t want to draw too much attention to his plans as he approaches the angry gators
Trump hasn't even offically become President yet.
I have read elsewhere, don’t have time to post a link right now, that Newt made it clear that they were just not going to continue to use that phrase, but were still actively committed to cleaning up DC. Don’t be deceived by these presstitutes!
It’s the MSM. It’s obvious that they’re trying to make it seem like Trump is ditching his promises, whereas all that’s being said is that he doesn’t intend to use the TERM any more.
is Gingrich an official Trump surrogate? Sounds like he’s projecting his own opinion...
Exactly
Ok, “reclamation” it is then.
