Just before the Ghost Ship lost power, a makeshift staircase turned into a confused bottleneck. A few people ran up the narrow passageway from the ground floor to flee the flames downstairs, hampering a much larger group trying to crowd-surf down. Not far from the mass, Aaron Marin scanned the second floor of the warehouse.
We all just looked at each other and knew we were trapped, said Marin, 45, one of the last people to escape the Oakland building as it was consumed by flames.
With just Christmas lights illuminating the room, he stumbled through thick smoke, clawed his way behind an inflatable projection screen, and jumped from a window to a patch of mud below.

Harrowing article on this tragedy. Thanks for the post!
Inflatable projection screen? I bet that went up in flames pretty fast.
And now he lights 36 candles a day. 36 little future ignition points wherever he is.
Glad I’m not the only one who found that a bit odd.
Poor choice of illusion.
My first thought, too. “I’m determined to set my lodgings on fire because of survivor guilt.”
However, the picture shows him lighting tealights in a rock garden outdoors, so it seems unlikely he’ll burn himself or others out.
He’s soooo attached to the others, huh.
My experience is that people who live in such arrangements are a very different breed and they don’t get too attached to anyone.
Some of them don’t get attached to anyone, ever.
Suuuure he has a solemn, little ceremony every day, suuuuure.
I love that movie. The opening scene was so gruesome but awesome special effects LOL
I’ve lit 36 candles every day since,” Aaron Marin said,
Looking at the photos of the place before it went up in flames, I figured it easily could have been a candle. Reading the article though it sounded like lots of multi-strips with heaters, stoves, extension cords running through the maze of makeshift “apartments”. Learn from this experience people - especially during Christmas.
Yah, it was a real spooker. The cable scene on deck was pretty shocking.
Maybe he’ll take a second look at traditional living. Might look good by comparison.
He sounds like a fire bug. Say you don’t suppose . . . .
Virtue signaling: Now in candle form, and not just for the young.
This dude is 45. He should know better. I must conclude he is a hippie.
