Who would have thought a butter knife could become the center of a school controversy? Last month, officials at Silver Trail Middle School near Miami, Florida, suspended an 11-year-old honors student for violating a county policy strictly prohibiting weapons on campus. The girls weapon of choice: a butter knife fit for a toddler. To highlight the dangers of having this dull knife on campus, the police noted to state prosecutors that the girl used it to cut a peach. Such is the folly of overcriminalization: Every minor mishap gets crammed into the criminal justice system when it could be easily resolved by other means.

To think, back in my day, we used to take our hunting rifles to school ... This education (indoctrination) system is so damn wrong today.
During the 90’s ... how long have you been asleep? ;-)
Thank goodness she didn’t make her pop tart into the shape of a gun...
Though if she had carved out the forms of genitalia she would have been awarded and given a book deal ...
Joke all you want but a butter knife can be a lethal weapon. It is not only lethal but it is one of the slowest and most painful death imaginable. Just thinking about it makes me want to retreat to my safe space and hug my teddybear. We have seen the universities where the teachers come from. They are full of safe spaces for what I call the little kittens (if you know what I mean.)
I carried a pocket knife with me from about the 6th grade on. Still carry one to this day. Never had the idea to hurt anyone with it.
Educators need to grow up and stop being children.
Zero tolerance policies are incredibly dangerous. They keep administrators from being held accountable for using their judgement as it’s easier to fall back on policy than actually make a decision. They punish perpetrators and victims equally so that perpetrators know they can get away with anything. And, ultimately, they dull children’s minds to the concept of right and wrong as every one is punished equally whether they accidentally sort of violated a rule (butter knife in lunch box) or they willfully violated a rule with intent to do harm.

Still going on in the 90’s, in Texas at least.
You scare me.
That’s when all this snowflake generation got its big boost from Slick Willie and his hippie gang.
“They will learn a lesson from this...as they should. “
Yes. The lesson they should learn is to flee the public school system.
Since you are on Free Republic; you are obviously being sarcastic.
No conservative would possibly believe a toddler butter knife is in any way inappropriate or unsafe to have in a lunch box.
Well, the issue then is leaving that school. Having children grow up in a screwed up society where they are prosecuted for bringing a butter knife to school is lunacy.
There is no reason why parents of good children have to worry about their little girl getting arrested, or their scout getting arrested, for doing something so innocent.
I’d rather have zero tolerance for the gang kids, and arrest them or send them to continuation school. And let the adorable tykes still do what normal children do, like bring a butter knife to school, or a penknife that can clean your fingernails.
Roger your sentiments and Amen.
I was a boy scout and I carried a Swiss Army knife in my pocket from age 12 through age 40, when 9-11 happened. I was probably the only businessman on an airplane wearing a suit and carrying a scout knife at the same time. It wasn’t one of those itty bitty knifes either, but a full knife with 10 different blades.
Nope, and I didn’t carry out any terrorist attacks either. Carried a “deadly weapon” for 28 years into schools, churches, offices, and personal homes.
We have a sick culture that was hijacked by leftists years ago. THAT is the problem.
Wow. Just ... wow.
You'd think that, but you'd be wrong. See post 22
A girl in my HS health class did a presentation on marijuana and brought a baggie so people could see what it looked like. The normally cool cat teacher was a bit shocked and made her take it out to her car.
Enroll your kids in a school where mine are enrolled and see if you want any sort of a knife in the hands of the kids. Maybe you just lead a sheltered life if this stuff shocks you.
Don't bring a knife to school is not all that hard to understand. Wow. Just...wow.
Depends what school your kids attend I guess. In dangerous schools, that is a easy weapon.
You said it exactly. This was in Rhode Island in 1966. I also carried a pocket knife with me to school. You were responsible. Kids were responsible. It is not that way any more.
Be fond of the old days does not change reality.
And your friend, the Eagle Scout. Even though he knew the rules he still brought a knife to school. To top it off, you are blaming someone else for the guys irresponsible behavior. Just like a liberal. What are you doing on FR?
