You are forgetting that China was an ally and a safe haven for fliers downed while on missions against Japan. Remember Chiang Kai-shek?

He was ousted to Taiwan in the communist revolution of 1946. That was 70 years ago. For most of the next 40 years, China was ruled by Mao and the country was horribly impoverished and not a real player in the economic world. Used for its size as a communist satellite by the Russians as a Cold War ally, they began its own military much like North Korea is doing today under the wing of China. Upon his death in 1976, the country went through all sorts of turmoil until a regime found its footing. Then realizing it had to compete in the world, the transition started and its current war with the US economy and commerce began in earnest, not to mention to political one that was already on.
