Texas Republicans have spent years trying to crack down on illegal immigration across the southern border with Mexico. Emboldened by the election of Donald Trump, however, the time may finally be right for the GOP to mobilize an assault on loosely defined "sanctuary cities," especially with two large counties eyeing such policies.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has pushed the issue to the front of his unofficial agenda for 2017, pledging in interviews and on social media to sign into law a "ban" on cities and local governments that are seen as protecting people in the U.S. illegally, with sanctions such as cutting state funding. Civil rights groups believe such pledges can lead to racial profiling.
Previous pledges by Republican governors and GOP-majority legislatures never have made it into law in Texas. But the political tide has changed ,.... already filed a bill for the session that starts in January.
"The American people made it clear that solving our illegal immigration crisis must be a priority," Perry said. "That starts by eliminating sanctuary cities, securing our border and enforcing the immigration laws we currently have on the books."
... Chicago, New York and Seattle, have adopted formal sanctuary policies forbidding police from asking about a person's immigration status or cooperating with federal immigration officials. Nothing like that exists in Texas, civil rights activists say. [snip]
But sheriff-elects of Travis and Harris counties, ... Austin and Houston, respectively, have said they are considering ending cooperation programs with federal immigration officials.[snip]
The debate rarely considers the officers who are sworn to uphold the law but find themselves caught in political battles, ...

There's a new sheriff in town and he will stop sanctuary cities- rogue cities- from violating the law with their illegal policies like forbidding police from asking about a person's immigration status or cooperating with federal immigration officials. This is over.
Trump is emboldening officials to enable law and order to be restored in American cities far and wide.
Officials includes governors, state legislators, senators, congressmen, mayors and all of LEO.
Tehy control the purse strings in the house. All they have to do is find a spine
They better
How 'bout just because it's The Law?!?"
Hard to see how “sanctuary cities” could be *banned*.Yes,they can be stripped of Federal funds (great idea). And squads of INS agents could be assigned to patrol the streets of such cities (also a great idea).
Abbott better not be giving lip service. It’d be hilarious to yank monies from Austin.
That works too
But I still wish congress would grow a pair when it comes to the budget
They are operating in violation of federal laws. They are aiding and abetting aliens that have broken the law by being here without a visa.
We will see how they handle this, can’t wait to hear the whining and moaning.
ABC has learned nothing. Sanctuary cities are illegal.
In the rest of the article:
“Texas came close to a sanctuary cities ban in 2011 when then-Gov. Rick Perry made it one of his “emergency” issues. A bill passed the Republican-controlled Senate after a tense racially charged debate, but failed without a final vote in the GOP-led House.”
Sen. Jose Rodriguez (D)(El Paso) says the bill is racist.... directed at Latinos.....the color of our skin and our accents,” blah blah blah.
“Trump promised to “end the sanctuary cities” and said those “that refuse to cooperate with federal authorities will not receive taxpayer dollars.””
“In Texas, the mayors of Houston and Austin recently pledged to be welcoming to immigrants. “We build bridges and not walls,” Austin Mayor Steve Adler said at a rally shortly after Trump was elected. “Nothing that happened changes who we are as a community, our values or our culture.””
I guess the Mayor can either tax the hell out of Austin’s residents to pay for the welchers or call upon one of Hillary’s wealthy donors and get them to foot the bill. And LEO should still go in and arrest and deport as many as possible, asap.

But wouldn’t it be great if congress grew a pair?
ABC news seems to be shocked that elected officials would entertain the notion of doing what they were elected to do.
Well that’s just yummy.
City officials involved in creating sanctuary cities can be prosecuted for conspiracy to violate immigration law. And they should be.
Ask yourself what would happen if this was, oh, the refusal to institute transgendered bathrooms in public schools. The rush to prosecute would happen so fast your head would spin.
This is entirely the unwillingness to enforce the law, an elitist anarchy promoted by the Obama Democrats and their GOPe collaborators.
ABC news does not even begin to examine WHY that political tide exists.
There are millions of aliens and elected officials and the organizations that feed off refugees and migrants that are in for a rude awakening.
If churches and others continue to flaunt the law they should get their charitable status revoked and prosecuted. They are not above the law.
They can go to these countries and distribute food and goods just as Franklin Graham and others have done.
Oh, they know. RAAAAAACISM! It's gotta be that racism, every time. They are just being polite by not pointing it out. That politeness proves their moral superiority.
If I am ever introduced to an actual MSM reporter, I will try to spit on the ground. However, my aim might be bad.
Don’t hold your breath until a couple of election wins on our side.
