No, really, in the end, this was brought to us by us. We failed to do a damned thing. When the FedGov doesn't do what it should, per the Constitution, it is up to us. But we just sat, thumbs in our noses.

That just isn't true, my friend. A good many of us presented the known facts to our political reps and encouraged many others to do the same. What else was possible short of a bloody uprising?
IMO, many of those reps who were lawyers and former judges knew full well what was occurring. They also knew very well the political environment would have simply given us Hillary in his place. They and the entire nation were between a rock and a hard space.
