A dam is on the verge of collapse and just a partial breach could create a wave 82ft high, experts have warned.
The Mosul dam is slowly sinking, sparking fears that 7 million lives are at risk if it breaks.
Even if just 26 per cent of the dam collapsed there would be floods on a catastrophic scale with the equivalent of 4,400 Olympic-sized swimming pools gushing down stream.
It would hit Mosul at 82ft high 100 minutes after breaching the wall and then three and a half days later it would destroy Baghdad with a 26ft wave.
Cities, towns, villages and farmland along 434 miles of the River Tigris would be flooded, according to the European Commission's Science Centre.
The dam is 37 miles away from Mosul where Iraqi forces are currently battling with Isis.
It has been put under the protection of Italian soldiers and Kurdish troops for the last 18 months while engineers have been working on saving the dam.

Dam it!
“...and then three and a half days later it would destroy Baghdad with a 26ft wave...”
84 hours later it hasn’t dissipated?
Horse hockey!
Call Noah. He better have Ark II ready for launch.
The sky is falling - the sky is falling. 7 Million people are in jeopardy.
Our _resident will say, lets bring them here we have plenty of room and a lot of the peoples money.
Maybe this seems cruel but it could happen with this doofus.
Not our problem.
Surf’s up, dude.
“84 hours later it hasnt dissipated? Horse hockey!”
That’s what I was thinking. It just doesn’t sound very likely.
I fail to see the downside.
No, bomb it.
A FReeper pointed out that Mosul is the modern equivalent of Nineveh.
Does the Bible predict something bad will happen in Nineveh? I forget.
I’m not at all familiar with the geography of the area. If the Tigris River ran through a canyon or even a valley, then I could see the surge of water causing that kind of destruction even that far downstream. But my impression was that the region was fairly flat; and if so, I would think the water would spread out as it moved downstream. Could still cause a lot of damage, but probably not a 20 foot wall of water that far away.
My question is, if they know that the dam is on the brink of collapse, are they draining the reservoir behind it?
Say after me: In·shal·lah,
That should make it feel better.
Really. Sounds like win/win to me.
It's a start.
It would be the will of their allahh,,
and marvelous..
Pretty sure I could hike my arse out of the area in 84 hours, to.
Hmmm.
Any way to maneuver ISIS in front of the dam and blow it?
