Mr. Tillerson emerged as a contender on the strong recommendations of James A. Baker III, the secretary of state under President George Bush, and Robert M. Gates, the former defense secretary, according to a person briefed on the process.
Mr. Kushner and Mr. Trumps chief strategist, Stephen K. Bannon, advocated strongly for Mr. Tillerson, and the president-elect became intrigued.

I sort of get it but it is a bit uncomfortable seeing all these cabinet members that held all these views that are the exact opposite of what Trump campaigned on. If someone like Bush had them, no doubt they would affect him because he didn’t have a clear idea of what he was trying to accomplish but Trump knows what he wants out of them
On the advice of James Baker? WTH?
I think it’s wishful thinking now to think Bolton is getting anywhere near the State Dept. Cleaning out the State Dept. is just as much a priority as rebuilding relationships with our allies. I wouldn’t think the State Dept’s job is to procure oil deals. Not to mention we have our own damn oil. This guy is invested in foreign oil.
Newt Gingrich? Since when is he the great conservative again? Has everyone forgot him cuddled up with Nancy Pelosi on the couch? I must have missed the memo where Freepers where supposed to start following St Newt again.
“Lodi, who again was it that you thought would be a great SOS?”
Believe me, whomever it is, they will have just as many people on FR with a list of grievances.
This is why outside of Newt and Bolton (both of whom are called GOPe, Bush-tied, NWO, and globalists), few credible names are even floated. Mostly because the people most critical dont really even know enough outside of people they heard of from talk radio to state a name.
Just FYI I thought Rudy what have been good, too. And it looks like he got the “ No good deed goes unpunished” routine, which was crappy, but he is pro abortion as well.
“Its a disaster on so many levels I dont know where to begin. “
Nothing stopping you from typing out this voluminous list. Saying you dont know where to begin is hyperbole and histrionics.
“Nothing good will come of this. Its all bad.”
Okay....
James Baker is an anti-semetic, new world order pos. I can’t believe he let him in the door.
“On the advice of James Baker? WTH?”
According to Wikipedia:
“He served as White House Chief of Staff and United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Ronald Reagan, and as U.S. Secretary of State and White House Chief of Staff under President George H. W. Bush. As Secretary of State, he helped oversee U.S. foreign policy during the end of the Cold War and dissolution of the Soviet Union, as well as during the Gulf War.”
So outside of him, he could take advice from Kissinger (sure people here would be thrilled there), Carter’s SoS (I think he’s dead), Whomever Clinton’s SOS was, Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Hillary (LOL) or Kerry (LMAO).
The bench is a bit thin, and this is pretty much the best person to ask as you are going to get. Like it or not.
... and I think Trump said that Jared was going to "do the Middle East" ... whatever that means.
Will he be any better than Romney would have been? Tillerson is a big Bushie.
“Trump needs to find out who is leaking the information and FIRE them!”
Absolutely. UNLESS, of course, the “leaks” are authorized.
doesn’t matter what Rex “supports; he works for President Trump now, who’s the undisputed boss. President Trump sets policy, the cabinet head implement policy. It’s that simple, and it’s ALWAYS been that way under all Presidents.
Cabinet heads are like VPs at a company. They either do what they are told to do AND do it well, or they get fired. All of the Trump’s cabinet heads understand this.
I trusted President Trump throughout his campaign, and I have yet to see anything that would change my mind. In fact, I’ve seen a lot to confirm my trust, including the fact that the left abhors, and I mean absolutely abhors, President Trump’s cabinet picks, AND the fact that President Trump continues to espouse EXACTLY what he promised during his campaign as he goes about his “thank you” victory rallies around our nation.
“Nothing good will come of this. Its all bad.”
EVERYTHING related to President Trump is bad to you, because you are an unmitigated nevertrumper troll who should have never been unbanned.
“and bad news, IMO.”
yep, more bad news about President Trump from you. Gosh, how surprising!
“Reagan wasnt always right. Trump wont be either.”
based on your posting history, Trump is NEVER right. but for a nevertrumper troll like yourself, no big surprise.
I’ve always viewed Gates as an odd bird.
I am not in favor of American hegemony. Hegemony has a price, in dollars but more importantly in the lives of young Americans. Like the ones dead and maimed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the ones John Kerry wants to kill in Syria.
No thank you. I’ll settle for a strong economy and fair trade deals with neighbors.
But these people would have to let their convictions go or there will be plenty of arguing.
In which case, if he has to, he’ll fire them and hire someone else :)
I just don’t like the ties to foreign oil at all.
Saudi Arabia STILL hasn’t paid for killing 3000 of my fellow NYers and your fellow Americans
“I will give Trump the benefit of the doubt on this one and see how it plays out. You on the other hand are just some anonymous person on the internet. You are free to run for president someday, win, then choose the Secretary of State you feel is more appropriate. Since you claim to know better than Trump, I urge you to run and win so that you can show us how it should be done.”
Well said.
Even when my impulse is to disagree with him on something, I realize I’m not intellectually capable of second guessing Trump. He’s been three steps ahead of EVERYONE since the primaries began, and selected - from what I can tell, an excellent cabinet. He’s built a ten billion dollar empire by picking the right people to do the job. It’s obvious that’s something he does well, and there’s no reason to think THIS time would be any different.
