Donald Trump shook up America. Now it's the world's turn.
The President-elect's decision to flout 40 years of diplomatic convention and take a call from Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen last week suggested he may be just as disrespectful of protocol on the world stage as at home. The call produced days of speculation about how the President-elect's impulsive style will reverberate around the globe and whether it could threaten the architecture of international relations. There are many global traditions and arrangements that he could target, though each could carry a geopolitical or diplomatic price -- one reason even presidents who have come into office with all guns blazing often find that there's a reason why some taboos last so long.
Here are some of the conventions Trump could shake up once he becomes president next month. [Hypotheticals]
Talking to North Korea's Kim Jong Un.....[snip]
Moving the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem...[snip]
Human rights as a foreign policy priority ... [snip]
Casting doubt on US alliances ... [snip]
Dropping the careful talk about Islam
The two presidents in office since the September 11 attacks have been highly sensitive to any suggestions that the US war on terror was a war against Islam. Bush visited an Islamic cultural center in the days after 9/11 and Obama flew to Cairo in 2009 to offer "a new beginning" with the Muslim world. Just this week, Obama warned that stigmatizing "good, patriotic Muslims" feeds the narrative of terrorists. But Trump is not known for careful language.

Talk plainly and carry a bigger stick.
Career State Department people are freaking out. I worked with DOS folks during my military career. By and large, they are good people. However, many have hopelessly inflated egos. During a real crisis, they bring almost nothing to the table, and expect and DEMAND that the military “grunts “ perform the heavy lifting. They also have a tendency to “go native” and will defend foreign interest above those of the United States.
The article says he is being “Disrespectful.” Is that true? No, how about he just doesn’t agree with your opinion.
Now all of a sudden, CNN is concerned about “traditions”.
Of course, when it’s about homosexual marriage, then “tradition” can go out the door.
yes...I will say, they do know how to roll when it comes to luxury hotels, restaurants, etc.
I think Saudi Arabia (and the rest of the gulf Islamic Fascists) are in line for major wake up calls.
If career state department people defend foreign interest above those of the United States, they should be fired.
Trump will say it, “You’re Fired... buh-bye.”
Disrespectful because the author looks to criticize DJT any which way he can.
Trump will not be led by them. Even if he did ‘obey’ the left, they’d still condemn him. Might as well do what’s right and let them all ‘twist & shout.’
Right, and when Obama unilaterally reversed 40 years of policy towards Cuba, CNN called Obama disrespectful?
Right - the current occupier’s ‘homo-evangelism’ tour of Africa went over like a lead balloon.
Yeah, that rat bastard. LOL! They will NEVER get it.
“Trump will not be led by them. Even if he did obey the left, theyd still condemn him. Might as well do whats right and let them all twist & shout.”
I totally agree. Author is an arrogant, self righteous type it seems.
No, they phrased the commie love-fest as an awakening that was long over-do.
New media needs to prevail. So many people that voted for the Clintons or ‘44 did so out of pure ignorance. They are ill-informed by the dishonest picture presented by the press. If they knew what was actually happening and what their government was doing they would not be supportive.
How about drastic reductions in “foreign aid”, also known as the “Enrich Foreign Dictators Initiative”?
That’s a real biggie. How could the writer have missed that since Trump has campaigned on that issue numerous times.
Likewise, the other money issue regarding reimbursement for our expensive military presence in multiple locations for our friends around the globe.
We defend their borders for decades while they build state of the art fancy new airports and bridges. Our transportation facilities are half a century out-dated in appearance.
I guess Trump should have flown there and bowed to him in person.
Oh yeah, that’s so traditional for American presidents....
Bowing before foreign leaders. Or I should say -LEADER. The second bow before the Japanese emperor was a cover for the backlash he received after bowing to the Saudi King.
He bowed out of deep respect, admiration and appreciation.
They put him there. His ties run deep (kinship). He owes them a great deal.
The United Nations in 1971 voted for Beijing to replace Taiwan in the China seat. Finally in 1979, official U.S. ties with Taiwan were cut in keeping with the U.S. acknowledgement that there could only be one legitimate government in China. And we separated our ties with Taiwan in 1979 completely during the Carter administration based upon our differences in government philosophy.
17 years earlier, in 1962, we were on the brink of nuclear war with both Cuba and Russia when Kennedy was about to bomb Jupiter missile sites in Cuba controlled by the Kremlin. And even though he was told they would use them if he did, SAC launched.
Over the past few years, the libs, and their questionable information funnel called the media, have been lauding Obama for his efforts to normalize relations with Cuba, a country that was going to obliterate a piece of the US and kill possibly millions of people, definitely thousands.
Yet these are the same people that are hammering Trump for accepting a call from Taiwan who threatened no one, to congratulate him on his victory.
When are we going to hammer these obvious moronic liars openly for this type of blatant inconsistency? And when is the public going to understand why Trump wants just as little contact as he has to with the media for reasons like this?
red
Seems to me it would have been not only rude to not take the call, but cowardly if to not do so was out of fear of how the Chicoms would feel about it.
