The rumor did, originally, before this guy picked it up and started running with it. Here’s the original story that alleged an NYPD investigation:
This article came out on November 2nd, two days before Mr. Prince started writing about the rumor. Now that I had to go find that article and looked at it again, it appears to be the article that you were asking about, which Mr. Prince was actually quoting directly. So it appears Prince has no “unnamed sources” of his own in the NYPD, but got his information directly from this article.
That website is the hoax site. It’s doesn’t even have an author’s byline attached to it. None of the articles on the site have a byline, because it’s just some idiot putting out clickbait to get ad revenue. Even the redditors who were originally investigating this stuff figured out that was a fake story a few days after it came out, for example, this /r/TheDonald poster was warning people about it a month ago:
