Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has suffered a heavy defeat in a referendum over his plan to reform the constitution, exit polls suggest.
An exit poll on state broadcaster RAI suggests 42-46% voted to back reform, compared with 54-58% voting No.
Two other polls gave the No vote a similar lead of at least 10 points.
Mr Renzi, who has said he would resign if he lost the vote, is due to make a statement at midnight (23:00 GMT) from his official residence in Rome.
The referendum was regarded as a barometer of anti-establishment sentiment in Europe.
The vote asked about plans to streamline parliament but it was widely seen as a chance to register discontent with the prime minister.
Populist parties supported a No vote.
The opposition Northern League leader has called for Mr Renzi's resignation.

The 17th is mob rule.
By this logic we would have President Hillary Clinton.
Does this mean that Grillo from the 5 Star Movement will likely become PM? Hes a Eurosceptic, but where does he stand on the migrants? I know hes a big environmentalist and claims to be neither on the right nor left. I wonder what Salvini and La Lega Nords prospects for the future are. Hes the one whos big on stopping mass immigration and terrorism.
Viva lItalia libera!
That wasn't going to happen if an unelected pawn of Brussels remained in power.
The majority of Italians did not think so.
The EU was doomed from the beginning. Brexit is the start of the unraveling. The nation state remains the predominant political unit. Since WWII, the trend has been the emergence of more and more nation states. Tribalism is the norm, not political and economic unions.
“Ummm... yes, keep the electoral college, but NUKE the 17th. Vaporize the 17th. The worst thing to befall this republic.”
My thoughts exactly. It was one of the “progressives’” biggest victories against America.
Perhaps ari-freedom was referring to another amendment?
Oh my.
Go TRUMP!!
Agreed. The 17th was the biggest mistake ever made in favor of progressive control through abolishment of state representation and their equal suffrage in the senate by direct election of senators by the populous.
The 17th effectively dissolved the union and our republic.
The 17th removed state representation and effectively abolished State rights and sovereignty.
The 17th gave each citizen in their district (3) votes, (1) for a representative and (2) for the senate. The senators no longer represented the states interests and now answer to the general electorate.
The 17th grew the influence and power of the general government by removing the the states ability to restrict it.
Repeal the 17th! Restore Federalism!
Sounds like the people have made him an offer he can’t refuse! ;)
That is some of the most twisted logic I have ever read. The 17th allows the big cities to choose our States' Senators. The College prevents the big cities from electing our Nation's President. Phooey!
Repeal the 17th!!!
“The Globalists were all in on this. Theyre tanking almost as bad as Krapernick these days...”
Ther Globalists are getting cremated, and this is only the beginning.
Praise God!!!
