At least nine people died in a massive fire that destroyed a northern California warehouse that was an artist collective during an electronic music party early Saturday morning and officials said the building had no sprinkler system or working smoke detectors.
Fire Chief Teresa Deloche-Reed said that at least another 25 people are still unaccounted for after the deadly blaze started around 11:30pm in the 1300 block of 31st Avenue during an event advertised as 'Rave Cave' featuring musician Golden Donna's 100% Silk West Coast tour.
'We still have to do a more thorough search of the building and we don't know the potential number of other victims,' Deloche-Reed said.
'In my career of 30 years, I haven't experienced something of this magnitude.'

But they have those regulations - a lot of good they did!
It’s incompetent and corrupt administrators that’s the problem.
Perhaps, but if you look at the pre-fire pictures, the place looked like one big rummage sale. There was a lot of clutter, and most of it was probably flammable.
It was a disaster waiting to happen. Unfortunately, it was full of people when the odds finally caught up to them.
I was told freebasing was old school (Richard Pryor jokes), but given the photos of the loft, lots of kitschy, retro, inflammable stuff, so maybe old school was "in".
When I was young, if I entered a place like that I would immediately leave. Way too much clutter! Long ago in the 1960s I used to frequently go to Fillmore West in SF. They had a lot of furniture including sofas under balconies, where you could watch the bands and dance floor, all on a second floor. If a fire started, at the least you could go to the open dance floor and make for the exits.
That warehouse in Oakland was definitely a hazardous trap. Just one dropped lit cigarette or joint and poof. Poor kids!
“Another reason to avoid Oakland”
Another asinine statement from someone who doesn’t know jack. I just picked up our daughter who lives in downtown Oakland about 20 blocks from the fire so she could have lunch with her mother. While there are places in East Oakland that are terrible (mostly black and ME trash), downtown Oakland is very clean and modern and has no crime of any consequence.

What ever dude

This young man was there and writes his account of what he saw and heard. From what he saw, if those 25 really are missing, they did not make it out.
If you have ever wondered why the doors of public buildings always swing outward, this is why.
“What ever dude”

First of sorry to hear that this awful event happened.
You posted the probable reality:
My guess: Old warehouse. Probably never upgraded the old wiring, and had an overloaded electrical system.
My second guess freebasing drugs.”
Also, probably no fire extinguishers or fire sprinkler systems.
Northern coastal California counties, Western Oregon and Washington have a lot of these so called art havens. They were factories, warehouses and sometimes old schools. They were abandoned and later emerged as places like this one, meeting places and places of free trade.
We avoid these places because of the potential of severe disasters like this one happening when you are there.
Why does the so called Mexican girl have an east European accent?
idiots abound, some won the darwin award in oakland
Personally, I would move the F out of Oakland, and yes pal I have been there.
Sorry, I didn’t see that you had already posted this.
I hate to see anyone die of ignorance.
Always have a plan
I read somewhere that the makeshift stairwell was made out of pallets. Like you said - What could go wrong?
No worries. Great minds think alike ;-)
