Donald Trump looked to have sparked a potentially damaging diplomatic row with China on Friday after speaking to Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen on the telephone in a move experts said would anger Beijing.
The call, first reported by the Taipei Times and confirmed by the Financial Times, is thought to be the first between the leader of the island and a US president or president-elect since ties between America and Taiwan were severed in 1979, at Beijings behest.
The US closed its embassy in Taiwan a democratically ruled island which Beijing considers a breakaway province in the late 1970s following the historic rapprochement between Beijing and Washington that stemmed from Richard Nixons 1972 trip to China. Since then the US has adhered to the so-called one China principle which officially considers the independently governed island part of the same single Chinese nation as the mainland.
Trumps transition team said Tsai, who was elected Tawains first female president in January, had congratulated the billionaire tycoon on his recent victory.
During the discussion they noted the close economic, political, and security ties that exist between Taiwan and the United States, a statement said. President-elect Trump also congratulated President Tsai on becoming president of Taiwan earlier this year. Beijing sought to play down the importance of the phone call, with foreign minister Wang Yi dismissing it as just a small trick by Taiwan.

What are they going to do to us? Refuse to fill our Walmarts with cheap plastic stuff?
This is totally bullshit. There’s no doubt in my mind that every sitting President since 1979 has had contact with Taiwan.
Who cares if China gets pissed? What are they going to do, row over here in their rust boats and yell at us over the loudspeaker? Give me a break.
Its called leverage.
As stated on another thread, it’s about time an American President stuck a finger in the eye of the Chinese Communist thugs!
It’s called not being a pussy.
China better not piss trump ...he isnt beholding and china could lose MFN status...that would mean a $17 TRILLION HIT TO THE CHINESE ECONOMY...
So whom amongst the SOS candidates would have the stones to do that....
crickets.....
OMG.....its Bolton.
Honestly, America holds all the leverage.
China can’t do jack.
Trump could get on the phone and tell them to demolish the islands in the South Chinese Sea, allow the Christians to worship freely with no repercussions, and tell them to cut their military by half.
They would do it.
So...
Let me see if I understand the liberal media correctly:
Obama breaks with decades of US policy on murdering Communist Cuba, and gets endless fawning coverage.
Trump breaks with US policy by taking a call from the President of Democratic Taiwan, and that same media calls it dangerous and reckless?
What none of the US Media dares to talk about is plainly obvious.
Trump is not even sworn in as President yet, and world leaders are already talking to HIM as America’s leader, and NOT with Obama...

I find it interesting that the Guardian turned off comments for that article.
I, as an American, don’t give a flying f**k what China thinks. Bring the wrath and dance in the fire.
Sounds like the media and career diplomats are a lot more upset about it than China is.
Still not tired of winning!
Lib Media = Owned Lock, Stock and Barrel By China
That means most people were trashing China, the article and the Guardian taking China’s position.
China does not like to be trashed on the Internet.
If we just have to fill our WalMarts with foreign goods then why don’t we get those goods from India?
I’d much prefer giving monetary support to India instead of China.
He’s getting the right and timely advice from the get go. This is an inmportant marker. Also P.I. and Okinawa are keystone countries defending the Pacific.
Truth!
in a move experts said would anger Beijing. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Buahahahahahahahaha!
Who gives a sweet eff? Barack Obama’s half brother, who lives there?
THe USA re-powns the Pacific.
Notice nowhere does it say China is upset. Only that the media presumes there is a “risk” they might get mad.
