President-elect Donald J. Trump has broken with decades of diplomatic practice in freewheeling calls with foreign leaders.

Mr. Trump talks to the president of Taiwan, becoming the first U.S. president or president-elect to do so since 1979.
Why it matters
The call with President Tsai Ing-wen risks infuriating China, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province governed by Chinese rebels. By honoring the Taiwanese president with a formal call, Mr. Trump’s transition team implicitly suggests that it considers Taiwan an independent state. The U.S. has declined to recognize Taiwan since 1979, when it shifted recognition to the government in Beijing. Taiwan itself has yet to declare formal independence.

Yup, and the media is not reporting it that way.
Now if he really wants to ruffle feathers he should personally meet with the Dali Lama and schedule an official White House visit in the spring. The NYT would go into full cognitive dissonance (we like the DL but the Chinese don't and you're not supposed to have official visits with him, the horror!).
There will be a course correction or change. Trump team has already been down-playing it and saying Trump didn't mean what the Pakistanis seem to have understood.
Having said that, I hope Trump is serious in sending a message to China by his phone dialogue with Taiwanese President. Pakistan is no Taiwan.

They can do missile tests and have their state news agency boast to the world of them “being able to destroy US Pacific bases”, but Trump cannot take a phone call from Taiwan??
We challenged the last communist empire on the world stage.
About time we did it to the current one.
Next thing you know, certain Religious Figures will be allowed to enter the Front Door of the White House rather than being forced to use the service entrance by the Garbage.
Then why the hand wringing?
