Media be damned, last Fridays gun sales exceeded all expectations retailers included.
Despite grim warnings in the weeks leading up to Black Friday, the FBI is reporting their National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) processed 185,713 total background checks on firearm purchase this year. Thats more background checks run on a single day since the system was launched almost two decades ago.
NICS numbers are the closest indication of gun sales since they determine whether a prospective buyer is eligible to buy firearms. Before ringing up a sale, cashiers call in a check to the FBI or to other designated agencies to ensure that each customer does not have a criminal record or is otherwise ineligible to complete their purchase. More than 230 million such checks have been made since the FBI launched the program in 1998.
From major retailers to local stores, the firearms industry as a whole is reporting record-breaking numbers from Black Friday.
Black Friday sales on guns, gun accessories and ammunition were the strongest weve seen in our 77-year history, said Ryan Repp, Brownells Communications Manager. Sales started off first thing Thanksgiving morning, actually, and continued at a record pace through Cyber Monday.

According to this article, Americans bought enough guns on black Friday to arm the Marine Corps.

Fun to watch the media dance on this one. First it was “Trump’s election means that gun sales will plummet”. Then it was “Sales of guns to minorities are up out of fear of Trump’s election”. This one ought to read, “Aw, Hell, They’re Still Selling Like Hotcakes” if we only had honest media...
The number [185,713] breaks down to slightly more than two background checks per second, or enough firearms to arm each of the 182,000 active duty members of the United States Marine Corps. Semper Fi!
I'm sure there are Reservists out there who are wondering "what about me?" Buy more guns! You don't want them to feel left out.
Media just feel obligated to make it up.
Well, seeing all the histrionics and protests of the left, the election of Trump does NOT make me feel any less eager to purchase a firearm.
Most MSM stories are an attempt to shape reality, not to report it.
Wielding power is pretty much their whole mission in life at this point.
NICS call numbers are on the low estimate end of actual sales. One NICS call and approval is used for any number of firearms occurring with a single sale or transfer. Many transfers occur without a NICS call needing to be made when a permit to purchase or CCW permit is used in jurisdictions where allowed.
Is anyone on FR changing their firearms purchasing plans because President Trump won?
- I can see delaying purchases of guns or of ammo in the hope that demand and prices will drop once the gravest danger has passed and a real American has been inaugurated as President.
- I can see making plans to buy silencers (more silencers?) if those restrictions are repealed.
- I can see planning to save and buy better quality items since we have a time reprieve, but the danger could return, worse than ever.
Me, I’m not planning any purchases at all. Anything i could imagine wanting if civilization came to an end, I bought earlier in this dangerous period that we are (I hope!) finally leaving. The only exception is more ammo as I use it, which at 100+ rounds a day is a big deal.

I’ll have to ask my wife...
Well, things may take on a more "celebratory" character, rather than preparing for grim eventuality. That'll be nice, for a while.
I agree - use the respite to evaluate and upgrade, including optics and accessories.
Lines at Cabelas Hartford translated into a 4 hour wait just to talk with a worker, never mind start the computerized sales process. That’d be another several hours. For $50 off the gun I wanted I’ll go back in the middle of the week and pay the extra $50.
Obama created millions of new gun buyers and reminded old gun buyers how much fun it is to bring home a new toy.
Both myself and a buddy have a little friend on the way from Palmello State armory. Nice $60 off sale, free ship, no tax. SHHWING!
