Didn’t that tradition first start with the NO Aints in the 70s?

Maybe, but the best “bag over the head” story came from the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL. They had a very erratic, eccentric owner named Harold Ballard who was known to engage in some pretty bizarre antics. He once fired the team’s very popular head coach (Roger Nielson) when the team was going through an awful stretch. There was a huge outcry from the fans and media, and Ballard couldn’t even find anyone else to take the job so he was forced to hire Nielson back. He tried to convince Nielson to wear a bag over his head behind the bench for his first game back, but Nielson wouldn’t take him up on it. LMAO.
