A massive demonstration Sunday at Hampshire College called for the school to reverse a decision to stop flying the American flag.

Veterans groups organized the protest after the school decided to stop flying all flags on the main campus flagpole, including the U.S. flag, following several high-profile controversies. The flag was lowered by students to half-staff before Veterans Day and in response to the presidential election, and someone burned the flag the night before Veterans Day.

The college flew a new flag at full-staff on Veterans Day.

The college said it would stop flying the flag in order to allow a discussion about its many possible meanings to students and employees from diverse backgrounds. School spokesman John Courtmanche said previously that, while some students take pride in the American flag, for others

School spokesman John Courtmanche said previously that, while some students take pride in the American flag, for others it is "a powerful symbol of fear."

A symbol of fear? Then the object of that fear must be the country that it represents. Tell me snowflakes, why are you still living here? You should flee from that of which you are afraid. There are many "safe space" countries you can move to.

Just another sanctuary for America haters.

Trump should defend that school - it’ll put a stop to this nonsense.

Precious little snowflakes should go home to their parents basement, throw themselves onto their beds amidst their Beanie Baby collestions and sob hysterically into their pillows.

If the college benefactors would hold off on donations until this school comes to its senses, it would have more impact than a demonstration to these misguided administrators. Kudos to the demonstrators standing up for our precious flag!!!!

I support your right to burn the flag. While I would consider it greatly disrespectful, and would have zero respect for any flag burner, if that’s what you want to do, feel free. Be prepared for any and all ramifications, such as job/school termination for your actions.

I do NOT support an institution disrespecting our flag for EXACTLY the reasons they give to lower or remove it. This is the USA, not some independent country beholden to no history, culture or people. These communist POS schools and professors need to stress that we welcome differing views, but while you are in this country you at the very least “tolerate” our flag and understand what it stands for. We do not have to cater to your whims because some symbol “hurts your precious feelings”.

A little background on Hampshire College and its niche: It was founded in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts for students who found the other (overwhelmingly Left-wing) colleges in the Pioneer Valley too "conservative." The other colleges generally have things like grades and requirements, and not everything taught on their campuses has some connection to socialist revolution.

For additional cultural context, here's a joke well-known to inhabitants of the Valley.

Q: Why does Hampshire College have such a long driveway?

A: To remind the students of home.

Shut the place down, cut off all federal funding. They don’t want to be in America, let them move OFF SHORE and take all their liberal, communistic ideas with them.

It is a small private school. It has always been a lefty-haven. Consider it a Berkely (East). Most of the kids are the progeny of very wealthy parents. Probably more so than Smith or Mount Holyoke (which are within spitting distance.)

They are not going to change. Ever. They have been nutjobs since their founding. That is not going to change.

I’ve lived in the southern valley forever. I never heard that one. But, it sure fits.

The school, catering to the wealthy and privileged, has for a long time promoted a leftist agenda.
