President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday greeted the news that Fidel Castro had died by denouncing Cubas longtime leader as a brutal dictator with a legacy of bloodshed. Trump, who vowed to help the island nations people achieve freedom and prosperity, did not explicitly repeat campaign-trail promises to roll back President Obamas historic outreach to the island nation.
The entrepreneurs reaction could scarcely have been more different than the sitting commander in chiefs response. Obama declared that now was the time to extend a hand of friendship to the Cuban people and largely sanitized deep Cold War-era criticisms of Castros record on human rights and economic freedom.
We know that this moment fills Cubans in Cuba and in the United States with powerful emotions, recalling the countless ways in which Fidel Castro altered the course of individual lives, families, and of the Cuban nation, the president said. History will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him.
Trump, whose initial reaction to the news was the four-word tweet Fidel Castro is dead! took a far sharper tone in a written statement later issued by his transition team.
Today, the world marks the passing of a brutal dictator who oppressed his own people for nearly six decades, Trump said. Fidel Castros legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights.

I don’t speak harshly of the recently deceased, although for Castro I’ll make an exception.
I saw one article comparing Castro to George Washington. Funny, I don’t remember staying in power for 60 years.
Obama takes a softer, slightly more treasonous approach.
The Yeti versus the Snowflake.
softer approach=lies
We’re supposed to be politically correct about Communist tyranny.
Interesting Obama’s statement did not mention Communism or tyranny once.
He offered condolences to the dictator’s family. Says all we need to know about Obama’s worldview.
54 days to the end of his presidency can’t come soon enough.
He was not entitled to the dignity of a natural death.
Well, God is the judge, not I, if there’s one thing that should be sad, it is the fact that Castro did awful things, and for questions, how is his brother, is he softer or just as much the tyrant? I don’t believe God is happy at sentencing someone to something other than heaven.
The good die young.
The evil men do lives after them.
The Castro brothers killed thousands and established totalitarian rule on Cuba.
Some people aren’t destined for Heaven. That is a fact.
Obama’s non-judgemental statement about the “Uncle Joe” of Cuba reveals the President to be an admirer of Castro. Amorality is by default immorality in this case.
I bet Obama would love to go the funeral and talk about himself.
Obama takes the “softer” approach because that is who is. An effeminate, bowing, apologetic, lying, little weasel.
No offense to weasels.
Liberals have no standards.
They see tyrants and free people as morally equivalent.
Most of us know that’s not true.
Of course not. I just hope the regime gets overthrown, eventually.
I sure hope he doesn't go to the funeral. If he goes, it will speak volumes.
Time left until Obama leaves office 54 more days!
I hope America has learned its lesson on socialism/communism. What a disgrace Obama has been.
Ah yes, Obama...groveling to Communist dictators even after they are dead.
I won’t speak harshly of Fidel. In fact, I hope (and fully expect) Fidel, Che and Ted Kennedy are having a reunion...along with Hitler, Stalin and Mao.
