Does the process cost more energy than is contained by the Ethanol?
If it does, then the Ethanol isn’t ‘fuel’. It’s just a bait for government subsidy.

Maybe solar panels covering the deserts would make it go!

Not necessarily. Ethanol is a way to store energy. Batteries are presently used for energy storage, and that can be very inefficient. If any spare energy (overage made by a nuke plant for instance, as well as the transient wind and solar) can be used in the process, it might be useful in some locations.

Billions will be poured into grants, subsidies and studies, and it’ll go nowhere.

“A process like this would allow you to consume extra electricity when it’s available to make and store as ethanol,”
So yeah, it consumes power.

You are correct in questioning this key point. It seems like since I was a kid people always talk about these schemes that don’t conform to conservation of energy. Unless they get the energy from some atomic source, in which case it might be great.
OK I admit I didn’t read the article yet.

No only is ethanol bait, it ruins ever small engine it touches. My boat motor repair buddy shuns it as well.
