As ABC 10 News reports, the incident occurred in the cafeteria of Silver Trail Middle School in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Asked by a friend if she would share her peach, the girl used a knife from her lunchbox to cut the fruit in half. Shortly after, she found herself in the principal's office, being coined a threat to her fellow students.
School officials say the honor roll student violated a district rule by bringing the knife to school. Her parents, however, find it nonsensical that their daughter's small, dull butter knife qualifies as a weapon. Andrea Souto, the girl's mother, explains to ABC 10 that the knife in question is considered safe for babies:
This is a set of a spoon, fork, and knife [is] for toddlers one-year-old[s]. It is made for children to learn how to eat properly. She's used it since she was baby.
The Soutos say that the experience has been difficult for their daughter. Usually a generous girl who's eager to share and help others, she is now fearful about making another mistake. Ronald Souto tells ABC 10:
She's afraid now of the educators. She's afraid of people at school. They need to change the system.
A spokeswoman for the Broward Country school district, however, says that the school was simply following their policy on weapons.

My grandson just started as a freshman at a very exclusive private school in CA. The headmaster is a big Trump supporter and refuses to coddle the students. Each freshman gets his or her own horse who they are responsible for for the entire year. They have to do everything for this horse in addition to learning how to ride. The headmaster thought that having the kids wear helmets was sissie-ish but that was shot down by the parents. I have hope that my grandson will emerge from 4years at this school ready to tackle the world.
It’s Broward County for somebody’s sake. It has been turned into the worse Political Correct cesspool of idiocy and dumbassedness in the state of Florida.
I hope they parents sue the school on the grounds that they are f*cking idiots, which should be a crime in a real world.
Hell. This little girl is lucky. If the school administrators found her with an honest history book, they’d execute her.
That’s the “PC Liberals” way.
“”that the school was simply following their policy on weapons.””
Heck - they would have said the same thing if it had been a mere picture of a knife! The parent should have made a stink and asked if they ever considered REVIEWING that policy? HUH? WHAT?
Your theory here is that the pen is mightier than the sword, so their reaction would be greater.
The whole point of this is to demoralize good kids. To make them live in fear of the arbitrary decisions authorities might make. Really, to break their spirits. They especially want to take the brightest children and find any excuse to destroy their future.
You could cut a snowflake with a dangerous toddler knife.
What a wonderful thing. That really sounds outstanding.
FWIW I think the parents were right about the riding helmets.
Falling or being thrown from a horse is a good step above
most of the falls a kid might take on a bicycle.
Once the kids learn some horsemanship they can go riding
bareback and without helmets on their own time.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
My son was permanently expelled for being in posession of a 2” fluorescent water pistol.
He and I were required to attend a safe schools presentation where some dumb ass school cop with a gun on his fat hip told us only cops were allowed to have weapons at school. I was carrying a fully legal .357 Ruger SP101 on my hip, but just didn’t think it would have gained anything to raise the point. Idiots.
F’em. all the rest of my kids were home schooled. Did I say f’em?
From my “About” page:
” I will know the Republic is safe when:
***
“4. A parent may pack a school lunch of Twinkies and M&Ms, along with a steel-bladed knife with which to prepare the Twinkies for M&M insertion, and no official will have [Richard] to say about it that anyone else need heed.”
Wouldn't want to lose that funding.
