There’s a federal database of undocumented immigrants like me. Don’t let Trump get it.
The Washington Post ^ | November 22, 2016 | Julián Gustavo Gómez, campus engagement manager for Define American

Donald Trump spent the presidential campaign promising to kick me and other undocumented immigrants out of the country. Now a federal database created to protect those of us who arrived as children could help him do just that.

More than 800,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought here as kids, myself included, have willingly handed over our personal information to the federal government as part of a program called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The program, started by President Obama through executive action in 2012, was supposed to temporarily shield us from deportation and give us temporary employment authorization.

When I applied for the temporary status in 2013, I had to provide U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) with every detail of my personal information — school records, bank accounts, my original Argentine passport and birth certificate and more, along with my address and every location I’d lived for the last 20 years. I included a check for $465 and went to a USCIS office near me in Miami to have my fingerprints and photograph taken. Since then, I have completed an application for renewal twice, with updates on my current address, everywhere I’ve lived since my previous application, and my current income. I received my most recent renewal just last month.

If Trump wants to use it to find undocumented immigrants, the Department of Homeland Security’s database of our addresses, fingerprints, employers and more could easily become a weapon instead of a shield. The database likely also includes information on thousands of Dreamers who applied and were denied for failing to pass a criminal background check or because they didn’t have sufficient evidence of continuous residence in the U.S. since June 2007, which is one of the guidelines for eligibility....

Trump has been very clear that his first priority is to stop the influx. His next priority is to deport felons. After that, he’s just going to let Immigration do its job.

I don’t think he has been that clear about DACA. They aren’t a priority for him. If you’re DACA, try not to be a felon.

Uh huh - how's that citizenship application going, Julian? One thing about all that information you gave the feds: you're not technically "undocumented" anymore. Illegal, maybe.

Anyone using the term "Dreamer" to describe illegals already ought to be docked ten points on the credibility scale. And anyone pretending that the issue is immigration per se ought to be docked at least 20:

Comprehensive immigration reform never came, and now we’re facing the most anti-immigrant presidency in recent history.

So anti-immigrant he married two, one of whom is now the pending First Lady? Right. We can have a substantive discussion of the matter, Julian, but not until you stop lying about it.

I despise the semantic games people play to normalize things. Illegal alien is an undocumented immigrant now...

But the phrase “database of undocumented immigrants” is a complete oxymoron.

It’s more like documented illegal immigrants....

Julián Gustavo Gómez, you are a sucker who took the Obama bait.

Obama could care less about you and he created DACA knowing it was a deportation list.

Obama’s goals was to exploit an angry, divisive wedge between “dreamers “ and the American public and to create a class of illegal aliens under constant threat of deportation that he could manipulate and control via desperation to stay in the country and avoid deportation.

...and don’t come back unless it is legal.

Anyone who's entered,or remained in,this country illegally (in violation of laws enacted *long* ago) should be barred from this country for *life*!

>>Comprehensive immigration reform never came, and now we’re facing the most anti-immigrant presidency in recent history. <<

President-Elect Trump is pro-immigrant. He is anti ILLEGAL ALIEN.

>>President-elect Trump has already promised to deport at least 2 to 3 million “criminal” undocumented immigrants in his first year. <<

No need for quotes. They were criminals the moment they set foot on U.S. soil.

The keyword is temporary. The other keywords are executive action. Well, temporary is not forever and executive action is not law. Someone should have explained this to you.

This person’s real quarrel is with his parents, and President Obama who aided and abetted his violation of the law.

If we are very fortunate, someone downloaded it to hiLIARy’s email server.

Scofflaw, how many laws has she broken? Falsified identity/paperwork? Remember when the DA assistant in Houston tried to press charges against 2 undercover journalists investigating Planned Parenthood’s profiteering off of dead baby parts?

Voting?

In state tuition for non-residents?

Taxes?

Remember when we were told they weren’t taking Americans’ jobs, they were only doing the work no one else wanted?

Why are the dreamers going to colleges? Are they trying to get professional degrees and higher paying jobs that Americans are waiting for?

anti-immigrant = Pro-American, as in . . .
"And now we’re facing the most Pro-American presidency in recent history."

has a nice ring to it. I like it!

I actually don’t have a problem with you Gustavo and you are from Argentina.

It is likely your parents came here legally and just stayed a bit longer. Not your fault.

However, going forward we need to end this backdoor immigration STAT.

I really could care less how many latinos come here, so long as they come through the front door like everyone else.

They should be required to write and speak English before admitting them. Try getting anyone from China or India to work in Hi-tech without speaking Engrish. Ain’t gonna happen and they would be forced to work underground like so many others do, for lack of those to crucial skills.

Moreover, why do Chinese and Indians get preference over those from the same hemispere as ours?

We have way more in common with Latinos than the other two godless countries.

So, don’t worry Gonzalo, we aren’t coming for you.
