Fashion Designers Are Boycotting Melania Trump. Shouldn't Bakers and Florists Have the Same Right?
Reason ^ | Nov. 19, 2016 | Stephanie Slade

"As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom, and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady," wrote fashion designer Sophie Theallet in an open letter this week.

People magazine reports Theallet, who has designed and donated clothes for outgoing First Lady Michelle Obama numerous times over the last eight years, may not be alone: "A source tells People, 'This has already been going on for months. Designers wouldn't lend to Melania, Ivanka or Tiffany, so they either bought the items themselves or wore Ivanka's brand. ... There was a lot of shopping their own closets.'"

Personally, I applaud Theallet's design to disassociate herself with the next occupant of the White House. I see Donald Trump as a shameful human being with few redeeming qualities as a leader and even fewer as a person, and if I were a business owner, I too would decline to serve his administration.

Melania could wear a burlap potato sack and still be more beautiful and elegant than the mooch who unfortunately occupies the White House at this time, temporarily.

It is going to be weird not having the first lady wearing a pink purple lime green and orange polka dot burlap sack with every media person on the planet fawning over the high fashion

Gotta ask, did she borrow this travesty from a brilliant, progressive designer, or did she actually spend her own money and buy it?

I don’t know who has been dressing her for the past few months (maybe her own line) but she looks impeccable and stunning.

To be fair, the author does say that she believes that bakers and others who don’t want to cater gay weddings, etc. should not be forced to.

I’m not seeing a problem here, other than a bunch of overly self-important designers having a public hissy fit.

I don’t understand why the 0bamas are upset about leaving the White House. After all, Melania is an immigrant.

they have fled the field because the know they are not up to the task

the designers lack the talent and wherewithal to design for melania

Yep. Pretty dumb move on the designers' part. As I understand it, there are lots of up and coming designers, lots of good people looking for their big break. Providing classy looks for a classy First Lady...yeah, that's something.

As for a "designer" outfitting MO refusing Melania... I'd say that's good news for Melania. Based on what I saw of MO - which was too much BTW - Melania isn't missing anything by not using the same designer(s). Although I will concede that the designers had an uphill battle in trying to make MO look good. Whereas Melania, she's got the build and looks to make just about anything work.

I’m sure the Trump women have far better taste than Moochelle and will look far more elegant. I’m also sure the designer in question would never have been considered by the Trumps. We can be sure that more class will be brought into our White House by the Trumps as well.

So am I to conclude that this “designer’s specialty” is clothing for Government Mules?

You should be ashamed of yourself by referring to Michael LaVaughn Robinson as mule. That's very insulting to mules.

A sack or a sheet. She really is really pretty. Pictures of her with Barron give a glimpse of her love for that boy.
