President-elect Donald Trump has picked Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions for attorney general and Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo to head the CIA, signaling a sharp rightward shift in U.S. security policy as he begins to form his Cabinet.
Trump on Friday also named retired Lt. Gen Michael Flynn as his national security adviser. A former military intelligence chief, Flynn has accused the Obama administration of being too soft on terrorism and has cast Islam as a "political ideology" and driver of extremism.
The selections form the first outlines of Trump's Cabinet and national security teams. Given his lack of governing experience and vague policy proposals during the campaign, his selection of advisers is being scrutinized both in the U.S. and abroad.
Trump's initial decisions suggest a more aggressive military involvement in counterterror strategy and a greater emphasis on Islam's role in stoking extremism. Sessions, who is best known for his hard-line immigration views, has questioned whether terror suspects should benefit from the rights available in U.S. courts. Pompeo has said Muslim leaders are "potentially complicit" in attacks if they do not denounce violence carried out in the name of Islam.
Pompeo's nomination to lead the CIA also opens the prospect of the U.S. resuming torture of detainees. Trump has backed harsh interrogation techniques that President Barack Obama and Congress have banned, saying the U.S. "should go tougher than waterboarding," which simulates drowning. In 2014, Pompeo criticized Obama for "ending our interrogation program" and said intelligence officials "are not torturers, they are patriots."
Sessions and Pompeo would both require Senate confirmation before assuming their designated roles; Flynn would not.
In a separate matter Friday, it was announced that Trump had agreed to a $25 million settlement to resolve three lawsuits over Trump University...

The train is being righted and put back on the tracks, hallelujah!
In like Flynn (the new one, not Errol)
Vague policy proposals my a*s. He’s been very specific on his policy proposals.
And they had to get the obligatory slam with the last sentence. AP (spit).
Islam as a “political ideology”
Yes, it is.
While the tracks themselves are getting repaired... hooray!
Trump’s going to spearhead getting this place into some simulacrum of the America of the Greatest Generation, with the modern technical improvements kept, of course.
I hope it isn’t wasted.
As well he should.
“In other news, Trump paid some pocket change to appease people who were upset now with his university, even though they gave it rave reviews at the time.”
Jeff Sessions is my kind of guy. He has stood for truth and justice when others cowardly chose to stay in the background. We need more like him in all facets of government.
This from the same people who never said Obama was shifting to the left. The AP is a bunch of liars and propagandists.
Trump is laying tangent tracks in the right direction.
The Left is feeling the ground shift. It’s a correction, folks. How does it feel to feel a move back from the brink of insanity?
Sessions had been coaching Trump way back when he started to knock policy proposals out of the park.
And people didn’t want to believe. Aww, all politicians give us the baloney they think we want to eat.
And then he knocks another one. And another one. And another one.
Scoff, scoff, scoff. TDS. Nevertrump.
More, and more, and more. The Left starts getting bent out of shape over him.
Humph. No worthy president ever played ball as a liberal Democrat in New York City, let alone that short a time ago.
Finally he exceeds all expectations.
“Our Political Savior!”
When your liberal friends complain about Donald Trump’s cabinet appointments, and talk about how the Democrats will fight them every step of the way, remind them that Harry Reid has ensured their confirmation. It was Reid who changed the senate rules, implementing the “nuclear option” making it impossible for the minority party to stop the President’s cabinet and judicial nominees from being confirmed.
“Being crazy was so much fun! We miss it!”
Yeah, the Senate keeps the legacy rules doesn’t it, if it doesn’t touch them?
Hey thanks Dingy! And just at the right time too! Please don’t kill yourself too soon on the treadmill, we might need more of this!
In a separate matter the AP tosses in an unrelated irrelevant comment they have already written multiple stories about. What crap passes for journalism these days!
But the funny thing is, it really doesn’t damage him like they hoped. He was willing to pay to make the unhappy customers happy, even though they had seemed happy enough at the time. He didn’t want even a hint of bad ethics left behind.
Mygosh, a pol who keeps campaign promises! President Elect Trump said his first international priority is to defeat ISIS. He’s putting together the team that can get the job done.
He’s not moving to the right - he’s proving that he has been to the right of all those we had hoped were moving to the right....he’s been consistent in all the relevant areas and it still hasn’t sunk in for some.
